Reviews
Not the best clubbing experience on a Friday or Saturday night. I've been here too many times to finally realise it's got a real dungeon feel to it almost like descending into the abyss. There's far too much grenadine in their raspberry and vodkas as well which is a little off-putting. Although I believe they have changed this policy, it was previously permissible to smoke in the toilets which I find abhorrent. Give it a miss as there are far better places along George Street, Darling Harbour or the entertainment precinct more generally.
Inventive food specials make this a great lunchtime getaway from the rat race of the CBD.
I came to try there Show case lunch and we tried various dishes
The Hawker Plate which had BBQ pork and hat yai Crispy chicken and satay chicken. The chicken satay really stood out for me,it's not your average satay stick! I was told it was marinated and you can tell when you see the yellow colour seep through most of the chicken, this is a must try!
Everything I had was nice which included the Thai Style Spaghetti with Crispy pork belly, Jerk Chicken (thank goodness it wasn't crazy spicy like I had in this Jamaican restaurant but it had a nice kick to it) Beef Rendang and Chicken and Mushroom Pesto Pie
We shared sum roasted Veges and the other dish that really impressed me was the Vietnamese Salad with Crumbed Fish, the dressing and the flavours all combine really well together
We had the mocktail version of Dutch Kitten which has a Apple, pineapple, lime combination and the Green Tea Berry! I prefer the latter and I prefer the less sweet option
Disclaimer: thank you for the invite and being a guest to try there winter menu by 80 Proof/Tim and Katey, appreciate it!
Overpriced drinks, Asian girls at the bar don't speak English
I love this place. I've DJ'd here on a few occasions for dance battles and birthdays. The sound system is amazing, the staff are very friendly and helpful. The food and drink are also delicious.
Beers are expensive for reasons unknown and the foods okay! Good joint if you want to hear some pommie accent and watch UFC!
Identity Crisis.
This place can't decide what it wants to be.
Nestled under Cheers in the heart of the movie district on George Street is 80 Proof.
It has a cool look reminiscent of a 20's speakeasy. Raw pillars and bare brick, a very nice space to relax. A nice selection of whisky and other top shelf spirits. The staff are, while not knowledgeable on the booze, enthusiastic and friendly.
But...
The gangsta hiphop belting out from the full DJ setup is jarringly out of place. I really don't fancy listening to an angry bloke shout about 'bitches' while I'm sipping a delicious woody 18yr old Islay drop and attempting to talk to my companion. The sound level is about 2 octaves too loud to hold a reasonable conversation and the pulsing disco lighting is not pleasant. It's a shame because 80 Proof has the potential to be a nice little bar where you could conspire in dark corners and whisper unsaid things to a friend in the night. A pity.
I hope it finds itself.
It's cool but they insist on playing dull rnb until midnight in a bid to get people drinking. Once it gets busy it goes off!
