In this new exhibition, her third solo show at ASW, Kerrie Coles finds inspiration in the play of light and its effect on subjects in Australia and the UK at different times of the day and in different atmospheric conditions. Coles has enjoyed painting both the natural and urban environment, creating works that capture the extreme contrast of light and dark at the beginning and the end of the day and the subtle tones produced by the light through mist and rain. Coles states “...I am primarily a landscape painter. Over the last few years the subject matter for my artmaking has been this beautiful city of Newcastle, its beaches, the harbour and the city as well as the amazing places to which I have been fortunate to travel, both in Australia and overseas. Having grown up in NSW I was struck, when visiting the United Kingdom, by the difference in the quality of light, particularly in Scotland. I visited Tasmania a couple of years ago and, to my surprise, the quality of light was similar to that in Scotland. Interestingly, they both are at a similar distance from the Equator although the effect of the light in the landscape was different due to the variations in the colour of the Australian vegetation and the shape of the terrain.” Kerrie’s work is represented in the Newcastle Art Gallery Collection, University of Newcastle Collection, HMRI Art Series, The New Royal Art Collection at the John Hunter Hospital and private collections in Australia, Italy, Japan, America, Canada, Switzerland & New Zealand. She has held twelve solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group shows in Newcastle, Sydney and the Hunter Valley. The exhibition Light Between the Latitudes continues until 4pm Sunday November 18.

This exhibition DRAWN TOGETHER brings together two artists who have a passion for drawing. Ruth Chapman And Susan Hall – Thompson have been friends, colleagues and co- exhibitors for more than 25 years and are like-minded about their belief in the power of drawing.
Susan has focused on the human figure for her latest drawings. The relationship... of people to one another and the world around them has inspired her to make works that reflect on these interactions. ‘For this exhibition I have drawn people I have observed in other countries and local environments. Body language is very powerful. When people don’t pose for a picture They become themselves, the antithesis of the selfie if you like.’
In this exhibition Chapman has completed a suite of works depicting ‘human portraits gained from her seven decades of life experience’. “These are emotive depictions from my memories of people who have played a significant part in my creative life and identity. I have chosen mediums to match the time and subject of each life experience ranging from a favourite model at art school to present day personalities.” Ruth continues her depiction of creatures in her environment - a leafy suburb of Lake Macquarie. She focuses on domestic and wild creatures and especially on her new Boxer puppy, following his progress over a year.
“I have chosen mediums and techniques suitable to each subject……at the same time enjoying the challenge of a range of techniques. I first chose charcoal for immediacy and its large range of mark- making possibilities. Exploration of a further textural range evolved over the last 12 months continually exciting my practice.”
