About Harry'S Cafe De Wheels

The story of ‘Harry's Café de Wheels' goes back to the depression years of the late 1930's. With the world on the brink of a devastating war, an enterprising Sydneysider by the name of Harry Edwards opened a caravan café near the front gates of the Woolloomooloo naval dockyard. Word spread quickly with Harry's ‘pie n' peas' and crumbed sausages soon becoming a popular part of the city's nightlife – keenly sought by sailors, soldiers, cabbies, starlets and coppers alike. Harry operated the caravan until 1938 when he enlisted in the AIF during WWII. During Harry's time in the Middle East, he was nicknamed "Tiger" due to his boxing prowess and the name stuck. Upon his return in 1945, Harry realised that Sydney hadn't changed much and it was still almost impossible to get a good feed late-night, so he reopened and the caravan has been operating continuously since. As the years have passed, Harry's has become a ‘must' for visiting celebrities. Harry's has served up the likes of Frank Sinatra, Robert Mitchum, Marlene Dietrich, Kerry Packer and more recently, Sir Richard Branson, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Brook Shields, Pat Rafter, Olivia Newton-John, Jerry Lewis, Billy Crystal, Pamela Anderson, Sara O'Hare, Lachlan Murdoch, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Adrian Greiner, Anthony Bourdain and Peter Blakely.

Best pies in Newcastle with the perfect location to get takeaway and sit by the water.

Some observations:
– Instead of napkins they only supply cheap tissues which fall apart and stick to your hands. Grab a handful because 10 tissues = 1 napkin.
– Their outdoor setup isn't very pleasant to sit in with ageing furniture surrounded by dead planters full of dirt and cigarette butts.

if you can only eat at one place in newcastle eat here i recommend "hot dog the wheels"

If you want faecal matter on a bun this is the place!! I had the hotdog de wheels I've never been so sick it was soggy and smelt so bad, I had the runs for a week!!

User

A decent late night snack option with mates. Good menu variety and portion sizing. Parking is a bit of a hit and miss but becomes easier the later into the night.

User

Went with my whole family and enjoyed the selection of pies. Also, what a view.

Curry Tiger Pie👍

Although I only live around the corner, literally 100m away, this is the first time I've been here. Having passed many times, noticing the photos of all the famous people who have visited, I've always thought I'd get something next time. Anyway, this is worth the wait. Decent food from a surprising large menu. Good pies, fast service, cheap. Lots of seating spread out around the place. I had the Tiger pie, I chose chunky beef which comes with mash, mushy peas and gravy. Bang on for me as a Northern Englishman. I will go back as I pass everyday to and from work, I'm going to get fat.

User

Stick to the iconic duo, cant go wrong with "The Tiger' and the cafe de wheels hotdog with chilli and mashed peas.

User

Eeast to get to...I used Uber.
The food was excellant5 and for a very reasonable price. Its in the comfort food category .

User

A classic in Sydney. I had the main meat pie including mash potatoes, mushy peas and gravy. My only disappointment was the crust. They say everything is made fresh but it had that previous frozen flavor...

User

Pies are too peppery. Expected better. Filling though. Pastry crust is thick. Hotdogs are average.

User

Iconic Sydney eatery with singe delicious meat pies. Late night partiers will enjoy the 24/7 availability.

User

Having read the history and reviews we were disappointed. The beef pie was OK but the veggie pie awful, so dry, no creamy cheese sauce. We felt that the pies had been in a warmer for some time.

User

I was expecting a lot more. Given the history and all of the celebrities that have visited here, I was expecting this place to have really good pies. I was mistaken. I ordered "the famous tiger pie" (with mushy peas, mashed potatoes, and gravy) with a regular beef pie. The potatoes and peas were fine but the pie itself had WAY too much pepper. I think that convenience store pies or frozen ones from the store are better. The only reason I gave 2 stars and not one is because the hot chips with gravy were pretty good.

User

Great hotdogs with a touch of Australia (avocado cheese and beans?). Anyway an explosion of flavors. Love the chips. The location is so easy going but so cool at the same time. A lovely spot near the water. Benches to have your meal all around the place. Only downside: there should be some music to create more atmosphere.

User

Love this Sydney icon! In a great location right on the water. A great spot to enjoy one of their tasty pastries hot dogs or rolls. Sampled a few of their pies, which were all very tasty. The curry chicken pie was the goods, even better turn it into the famous tiger pie by adding mash potato, peas and gravy. The pulled pork roll a new addition to the menu also a good option. But my favourite has to be the fully loaded hot dog de wheels. A great place to visit if you are showing someone around Sydney.

Harry's is an institution in Sydney. Who hasn't tucked into one of their pies or hot dogs? The have a new range out that included Pulled Pork Rolls, Spinach & Feta in Freshly Baked Puff Pastry, and Apple Turnovers. Food is quick and delicious. Totally worth a visit if you haven't been to the original that started it all!

Back in the day a trek to the ‘Home of Sydney’s Best Pie’ was the end note of many a good night out not only for eastsiders but for the who’s who of the city social scene. It’s Woolloomooloo water views made it the destination food truck / converted shipping container and since 1945 is now quite the icon. The menu was simple, the towering heap of mash, peas and gravy optional and it set the standard of ultimate meat pie satisfaction that many have tried and failed to replicate for decades!

It was nice to return to this place many years later as an adult experiencing the nostalgia of many late night conversations, recovery and hanging out by the jetty as a rebellious teen.

New Items to the classic menu include the APPLE TURNOVER, PULLED PORK ROLL, but today, opted for the CHICKEN CURRY PIE!!! Had it the good old fashioned way with dollops of mashed potato and mashed peas with the standard pool of gravy that oozes like lava as you break through with your fork!

Perfection.

Original Pie Heaven right here!

User

Love this place. Good tunes, great food, friendly staff. The bloke who works nights knows my order by now and always makes me feel welcomed.

User

Pretty good spot, nice benches to sit on under the trees, with a view of water lapping quietly at the shore, it's a relatively seagull-free location. The food is varied, but not as delicious as the last few times I tried it. Lots of stars have visited there, and the photos and memorabilia are interesting to read.

User

Pie with mash and chilli sauce, my fav 😁😁😁

User

Amazing food!! It's also one of the most iconic restaurants in Sydney

User

Used to be great. Now just instant food... Not that appetizing. Last hotdog from here. Pies were good though!

User

New location for an iconic establishment. Try the Tiger Pie that has both mash potatoes and mash peas.

User

It's not the food but the atmosphere that makes it unique. Perfect as a quick snack.

User

Love this place... The hotdogs are very similar to the large American hotdogs with proper chili and cheese.. A nice addition is the mushy peas on the hotdog with chili sauce.. yum..

User

Isn't what I was expecting... I'm sure I can pay less for the same taste of Chicken Mushroom Pie on the Supermarket.

User

The best part about this place are it's unique flavours. But i have to say, quality wise, it's not amazing. Its good. But a little over hyped.

User

Loved it! Tiger, baby.
