The President, NSW Series X3, brought his Excel to us today for some final set-up in readiness for Rd 7 of the NSW Championship to be held at SMP on Saturday 8th September. We fitted a pair of our strut tops to the front coilovers. These allow camber and caster adjustment at the top of the strut. We added offset caster bushes to the lower control arms to further increase caster. Ride height and rake were set and the car was wheel aligned and corner weighted.

Today a customer brought us a bare front subframe and rear control arms out of their LX Torana. The customer is restoring the Torana and asked us to supply and fit all bushes, ball joints, springs and shocks for the car. We fitted poly bushes to all pivot points. The lower front control arm bushes are adjustable for camber and caster. The bushes we fitted to the rear upper arms allow adjustment of pinion angle. New tie rod ends and steering coupler were also fitted. We suppli...ed Spax 28 stage single adjustable shocks and King Springs.

We have been converting VL Commodore front strut legs to a coilover set up. We cut the spring platform off, cut the strut leg to suit our Spax 28 stage adjustable insert and welded on a threaded coil over tube. We assemble using our coilover hardware and Spax insert and coil springs to suit the customer’s requirements, resulting in front suspension that is adjustable for ride height, damping and rebound. We have been making panhard rods for early model solid axle Commodores. Unlike the standard rod, ours are adjustable allowing the diff to be re-centred after lowering the car, or to locate the diff as most suitable for the car’s intended use. These rods will be powder coated then fitted with turnbuckles and poly bushes. Some will go onto our shelves, others will be packaged and freighted to their new owners.

The #19 Suspension Concepts Series X3 Excel has been repaired, painted and wrapped. This afternoon we had it on the wheel aligner for final set-up of camber, caster, rake, ride height and corner weighting in readiness for track testing this weekend.

We have been working on another 4WD today. This time we have a current model Mitsubishi Pajero in the workshop for a Lovells lifted suspension upgrade. The upgrade kit includes springs and shocks. The customer also asked us to add rear air bags to help with load levelling. Our work was completed with a comprehensive wheel alignment. The end result was more ground clearance and improved on and off road ride quality.

At Suspension Concepts we regularly see Series X3 Excels in the workshop. This week we had another race car to be set up for Rd5 of their Championship. The Excels will race on the tight and twisty SMP South Circuit on Sunday 24th June. The one-make Series X3 cars can choose from four control suspension packages and Suspension Concepts are the supplier of the Spax kit. This car is fitted with the XYZ Suspension package.
The driver of this particular car is new to the Series th...is year and was becoming frustrated in his efforts to find a setup that worked well. We added a set of our front strut tops that provide additional camber and caster adjustment and completed a full race setup. We look forward to hearing from the driver about the changes we made to his car.

One of our jobs this week was a request to modify a pair of rear trailng arms for a Hot Rod. The customer wanted us to make the arms adjustable to correct pinion angle. Because of the unusual shape of the arms we could not fit a turnbuckle, so instead, simply made one end of the arm adjustable. This was achieved by cutting off an eye, welding threaded tube to the eye and adding threaded rod and locking nut. Why not give us a call for your custom suspension requirements.

This week it has been our pleasure to have a magnificent Lotus Eleven in the Suspension Concepts workshop.
The Lotus Eleven is built around a tubular steel space-frame with stressed aluminium panels that weigh in at only 30kgs. Independent front suspension and a De Dion rear axle are clothed in a sleek aluminium body designed by aerodynamicist Frank Costin. The car was designed for the 1,100cc class with a Coventry Climax FWA, although engine sizes ranging from 750 to 1,500...cc were used. The Lotus Eleven was a class winner at the 1956 Le Mans 24 hour race. The little car has an all up weight of just 400kgs.
This particular car has been brought to us for analysis of its suspension components and setup. Our evaluation is still underway and we will decide whether to replace the shocks or restore the existing shocks and re-spring them.

We have had a number of Torana’s come to the Suspension Concepts workshop over the last couple of months. Today the owner of this awesome LJ drove it to the workshop for us to check and adjust the alignment. The owner of the car is a Torana enthusiast and he has built it to exactly replicate an LJ GTR XU-1. The car is only recently completed and will be driven daily, not hidden. We checked alignment making minor adjustments to the camber and toe settings. Although running an... XU-1 202ci motor with triple strombergs the car is a pleasure to drive and will be quite suitable for daily use. This Toyota 86 belongs to a young driver competing in the 2018 NSW Production Touring Cars Championship. The car raced at Sandown Park in Round 2 of the Championship last weekend in what were at times very wet & difficult conditions. The car came to Suspension Concepts for some updates and a full set up. We fitted a pair of our adjustable strut tops to the front which allow for additional adjustment of camber and caster. Recently on the Suspension Concepts wheel aligner was this very desirable Holden GTR Torana. It is a genuine 1970 LC GTR Torana with the original 2600S engine.
It came to Suspension Concepts for a wheel alignment because the owner was concerned with its on-road tendencies to wander and follow the contours in the road surface. Our evaluation determined that the original alignment settings for crossply tyres were still in place from 48 years ago! This set-up is unsuitable for m...odern radial ply tyres. We completed a full wheel alignment, including adjusting caster and shimming for additional camber. Although not driven often, the owner reports that it is now very nice to drive.
