#DonateLifeWeek
Today marks the end of DonateLife Week for 2018 and if you haven’t already, please consider your donation decision and register that decision here (it only takes 1 minute): www.donatelife.gov.au/amsa
This week many AMSA students have registered to #donatelife and had the chat with their families. When your Donor Registry card arrives in the mail, make sure you show it to your family so they know your decision. The final decision to donate is always up to your ...family and 90% of families agree to donation when their loved one has registered their decision.
As medical students, we are in the privileged position of witnessing the impact of organ donation from all sides. From the remarkably generous donors and their families to those patients fighting to survive on the waiting list and to those who are living their second chance at life.
So please #donatelife to help #endthewait and #makeitcount today: www.donatelife.gov.au/amsa

This is the story of how my dad was a victim of the organ donation shortage. We as medical students and members of the community keep hearing about how important it is to become an organ donor. We keep being told the waiting list is long, there are not enough organs and that people die waiting for the organ that never comes.
Well, this became my dad’s reality. My dad was the most incredible father, husband, brother and son who always worked hard and looked after his family. H...e ran every day, ate all the right foods, never smoked and rarely drank alcohol. Everything was fine until one day our lives changed forever. He was given the diagnosis of a rare lung condition which soon lead to COPD, poor lung function and full time home oxygen. He was only 56. We were told the only option left was a double lung transplant. Without this my dad would die. We waited two years, and although his quality of life was poor, he was lucky enough to eventually get that call. The call that said, “we have a match and you need to come in for the transplant straight away”. That call at 1am was the happiest moment in our lives.
However, unfortunately the match was not perfect and he soon experienced organ rejection. The happiest time in our life soon turned out to be the scariest. Dad was told that unless he had another double lung transplant within the next 6-12 months that he would die. He went back on the list and waited. We watched my dad get sicker and sicker by the day. We waited for that phone call, however it never came. The doctor said that there was a shortage of lungs, and although dad was at the top of the list all we could do was wait. A few months later dad died waiting for the lungs that never came.
Dad died in April last year, and it still hurts so much to know that his death could have been avoided. That if there were more donors and therefore more lungs available, my dad would still be with us today. My dad won’t ever see me graduate from medical school, get married or have kids all because there was a shortage of lungs. He died from something that didn’t have to kill him. That’s the part that hurts me the most. My dad wasn’t the only one. There were many more men, women and children who died waiting for lungs too.
The DonateLife week campaign is so important to help save people like my dad. You never know when someone you love will need the gift of life. I hope my story gives you some perspective about the gravity of this shortage and the effect it can have on a family’s life. I never thought this would happen to my family, however the organ shortage took my dad away from us.

English Language Test requirements for final year medical students: Congratulations to all our final year students nearing graduation! For everyone starting your medical internships next year, did you know that if you didn’t complete at least two years of secondary school taught solely in English in a recognised country, then you might need to complete an English language test – even if you’ve studied medicine in Australia? Save yourself any surprises at graduation and check the English language skills standard to ensure you are eligible for registration.

This week AMSA is turning purple to support DonateLife Week! Each year thousands of Australians wait for a life-saving organ transplant. Unfortunately only 50% will receive that transplant each year. This week we will be sharing a story from one of our medical students and the devastating reality of these statistics. Currently, 2 in 3 of us are willing to donate if the time comes but only 1 in 3 are registered on the Australian Organ Donor Register.
Registering your decision... is simple. All it takes is your medicare card and 1 minute of your time.
If you would like to give the gift of life then register today: www.donatelife.gov.au/amsa
