Australian American Association Canberra Description

The Australian American Association – Canberra Division was established in 1960 by a small group of enthusiastic supporters of the Australian American alliance. They aimed to build friendship, mutual understanding and co-operation between the peoples of Australia and the United States of America.

The inaugural president of AAA Canberra was Sir John Crawford, a prominent Australian and the “architect of Australia’s post-war growth” Sir John held various distinguished posts in the Australian Public Service and the Australian National University, serving as both Vice-Chancellor and Chancellor. He was named the Australian of the Year in 1981.

Over the years, the Association has striven to achieve these ambitious goals. In 1989, the Sir John Crawford Scholarship was established to assist young Canberrans to travel to the United States to advance in an area of study, research or initiative that will benefit their career or personal development.
