Meet the chair of the symposium: Professor Klaus-Martin Schulte.
A well-known figure to ANU medical students, Prof Schulte is an Academic General Surgeon with specific expertise in Endocrine and Major Trauma Surgery. Having trained in Germany, Paris and Harvard Medical School, he has been lead clinician for endocrine & major trauma surgery at King’s College Hospital. In 2014, he joined ANU as Chair of Surgery and The Canberra Hospital as a Visiting Medic...al Officer.
Prof Schulte is passionate about teaching medical students and has helped us organise an educational conference that will be relevant to students in all year groups. One of the talks he will be co-delivering with Dr Paul Cooper will be on the interface of Physiology and Surgery.
Tickets will be released TOMORROW @ 8pm! Tickets are free but limited.

Want to learn more about the surgical management of facial injuries? Come listen to Dr Dylan Hyam - clinical director of oral & maxillofacial surgery at TCH. Dr Hyam has served for the Royal Australian Army and has an interest in managing complex maxillofacial cases, head & neck cancers, and bone grafting procedures. Prof Shulte has arranged for him to speak to us about aspects of facial surgery that medical students should be aware of.... We are very privileged to have him on board.

... Fascinated by Heart and Lung Surgery? Make sure you come listen to Dr John Tharion - a Cardiothoracic Surgeon with 48 years of experience! Prior to moving to Canberra, Dr Tharion was running the early open-heart units in India. He has done voluntary work and teaching in Nepal and Africa, and has taught in various countries with a group called ‘Specialists without Borders’. Prof Schulte, the chair of the symposium, has arranged for Dr Tharion to speak to us about lung cancers.

ASSA has announced the first inaugural Australasian Golden Scalpel Games®! This is the first competition that will allow every University from Australia and New Zealand the opportunity to compete in a series of surgical skills!
The competition will be held at #ASSC18 this year in Sydney. As this year is a showcase for future years, there will be 10 teams (of 5), with each University reserving at least one team-member who is an #ASSC18 full-registration holder.
