Australian Strategic Policy Institute Description

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) is an independent, non-partisan think tank that produces expert and timely advice for Australia’s strategic and defence leaders. ASPI generates new ideas for government, allowing them to make better-informed decisions for Australia’s future. ASPI is one of the most authoritative and widely quoted contributors to public discussion of strategic policy issues in Australia and a recognised and authoritative Australian voice in international discussion of strategic issues, especially in the Asia-Pacific.

ASPI aims, through its website, publications, blog, events and media activities, to be innovative, accurate and well-informed and to broaden public knowledge about the critical strategic choices our country will face over the coming years. The institute’s work helps to foster strategic expertise in Australia through dialogue, research and its contribution to public debate. ASPI strives to provide a strong focus and constructive commentary on the practical choices and issues which confront Australia’s strategic policy decisions, and this is reflected in ASPI's core values of collegiality, originality and innovation, quality and excellence, and independence.

ASPI was established by the Australian Government in 2001 and is partially funded by the Department of Defence with other sources of revenue including sponsorship, commissioned tasks, a membership scheme, sale of publications, advertising and event registration fees.

ASPI warmly invites you to attend a panel discussion on whole-of-government coordination in outbreak responses.
Threats like ebola, SARS, bird flu and others have cost millions of lives and wiped billions from the global economy. Australia’s step-up in our region includes the establishment of the Health Security Initiative for the Indo-Pacific. Health security, for Australia, means the avoidance and containment of infectious disease threats with the potential to cause massive... social and economic damage to ourselves and our neighbours.
Dr Jonathan Quick currently serves as chair of the Global Health Council and is the author of The End of Epidemics: The Looming Threat to Humanity and How to Stop It. Currently speaking around Australia, from Brisbane to Melbourne, Dr Quick offers new perspectives from firsthand accounts of successes and failures in containing these diseases.
Other panel members include:
1) Ms Sharon Appleyard, First Assistant Secretary Office of Health Protection, Department of Health 2) Mr Blair Exell, seconded to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as First Assistant Secretary of Education, Community Safety and Health division
A drinks and canapes reception will conclude the event.
The event is generously sponsored by the Indo-Pacific Centre for Health Security, located in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which brings together expertise from relevant Australian government agencies to implement Australia’s Health Security Initiative for the Indo-Pacific region.

Much of the debate about nuclear weapons centres on their abolition when we should really be asking what is so important that we would be willing to fight a nuclear war over it.

A more inward-looking United States, greater international diffusion of power, increasingly militarized foreign policy, and shrinking space for multilateralism and diplomacy are now common features of the international order. The ASPI Global Powers masterclass is a half-day intensive event that will give participants a strategic overview of the prospects for peace and/or conflict in 2019 between the major powers: Russia, China and the United States.
Following individual prese...ntations from speakers, each representing a specific global power, presenters will then come together for an interactive panel discussion with the audience.
Speakers include:
1) Sir John Scarlett KCMG OBE, former Chief of British Secret Intelligence Service 2) Mr John Garnaut, former China correspondent and senior government adviser 3) Dr Elsina Wainwright AM, Non-Resident Senior Fellow, United States Studies Centre 4) Mr Peter Jennings, Executive Director, Australian Strategic Policy Institute

ASPI’s International Cyber Policy Centre and Omni Executive warmly invite you to attend a panel discussion on the future of cyber defence.
This special ASPI event will examine the fundamental cybersecurity conundrum: humans are critical parts of both the cybersecurity problem and the solution. Around this conundrum, the international and Australian panel members will look at the emerging cybersecurity threats and challenges and the next generation cyber workforce – how we bui...ld it and how it can be augmented with artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies.
The panel will feature two international guests: former Deputy Chief of the US National Security Agency and Director of Intelligence for US Strategic Command, Mr Scott George and the Director of the Advanced Cyber Technology Centre at Northrop Grumman, Dr Dennis McCallum. An Australian perspective will be offered by Dr Lesley Seebeck, CEO of ANU’s inaugural Cyber Institute.
