Use the words ‘drone’, ‘accident’ and ‘investigation’ in the same sentence and the likely assumption from many would be that a safety agency is investigating an accident caused by a drone.
But as the drone era gets underway, so far they are more likely to be the tool rather than the object of accident investigation.

It's that time of year when we let our dads get away with lame jokes like the following:
'I didn't actually practice before flying a drone, I thought I would just wing it!' #dadjokes
If you're buying a #drone for your dad this Father's Day, don't forget rules apply when he flies.
... For more info, show dad our drone safety animation and our dedicated drone website: droneflyer.gov.au #flysafe #flysmart

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has demonstrated a prototype wing that folds in flight by using shape memory alloy.
The ability to shape wings could increase aircraft performance by reducing weight and drag, while improving aircraft control.

We've just published the Summary of Consultation detailing public feedback and our response on the new draft general operating and flight rules – Part 91 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998 (CASR).
The document includes the rules that will be amended in response to public feedback.
Part 91 won't start immediately, however we intend to have a single commencement date with no transition period for all flight operations regulations—Parts 91, 119, 121, 133, 135 and 138 of CASR in March 2021.

Could single-pilot passenger planes soon be a reality?
The Boeing Company is actively working on technology that would remove the need for two pilots in the cockpits of its passenger jets.
Currently, European aviation rules state that passenger planes with more than 20 seats must have at least two pilots in the cockpit.
... But Steve Nordlund, a vice president at Boeing, said technology that would allow for a reduction in crew in the cockpit was being developed at a ‘good speed’.

Don’t forget to have your say
Time’s running out to provide feedback on new draft regulations for aeroplane air transport operations.
We are seeking feedback on the proposed changes through two separate consultations – larger aeroplanes and smaller aeroplanes — through our Consultation Hub (https://consultation.casa.gov.au/)
.. . The consultations close on 2 September. And don’t miss our special webinar on proposed changes to smaller aeroplane air transport rules (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ss_QD9yF 95Y&t=7s).

Catch up now on what our experts had to say about the proposed new rules for smaller aeroplane air transport operations and how they may affect the sector.
Public consultation opened on 3 August 2018 on new draft regulations for smaller aeroplane air transport operations - Part 119 and 135 of the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations and the Part 135 manual of standards.
The proposed rules aim to improve safety and consolidate requirements to make them more operationally focussed... and easier to use. In particular, the rules aim to reduce the safety differential between charter and regular public transport through common rules that apply to all air transport operations but scaled for size and/or complexity.
There is still time to have your say and make your feedback count, visit our Consultation Hub (http://bit.ly/2whc9qk) Consultation closes 2 September 2018.

On 8 November this year, the fixed fuel reserve for small piston aeroplanes will change from a recommended 45 minutes to a required 30 minutes (45 minutes at night), plus any specified variable reserve.
Pilots who expect to be landing with less than their fixed reserve will be required to broadcast ‘Mayday Fuel’, to alert air traffic control and other traffic that they require priority to land as quickly as possible.

"They say you don’t know what you don’t know, but I should have known better! Complacency, short-cuts and most of all impatience, have no place in aviation."

A drone flown over a Northern Rivers bushfire on Saturday caused the NSW Rural Fire Service to ground all firefighting aircraft in the area.
Flying your drone over or near a bushfire could put people, property or other aircraft at risk—and could cost you up to $10,000 in fines or penalties.
Our ‘Can I fly there?’ app is updated with the latest fire and emergency operations for all Australian states and territories (except Northern Territory).
... Remember, drones must not be operated in a way that creates a hazard to another aircraft, person or property.
Be drone smart – check out droneflyer.com.au for the app, helpful videos, a run-down on the simple rules and quick quiz to keep your drone flying fun and safe.
