About Effective Altruism Anu

We are a student organisation dedicated to spreading the idea of effective altruism—that we should apply evidence and reason to find the most effective ways to improve the world. In particular, we promote the ideas that: (1) We are in a unique position to do good, and it's important that we care. (2) Through rational decision making, we can make a much larger difference. (3) We can, and do, enjoy doing it!

Effective Altruism Anu Description

We're a student group who want to help others. We're particularly interested in working out how we should go about doing that, and what reason and scientific evidence tell us about what the most effective ways to help are.

We run semi-weekly events, both educational and social, which anyone in the ANU and wider community are welcome to come along to - especially if you have a different point of view to share! We love discussion and debate and hearing new perspectives!

We're not out to convince anyone of anything and, as a club, we're not committed to any specific set of values or moral theory. What we generally agree on is that:

(1) We can help! Living in a high-income country, we're in a position to do a lot of good with the time and resources available to us.

(2) We should help! Helping others is worth doing, and it's important that we care.

(3) Critical thinking and careful research might reveal way more effective ways to help others (e. g. , if we want to save lives, there are some charities which save hundreds of times more lives for the same cost). Whatever our personal values, we should use evidence to help realise them.

We're Effective Altruism ANU. If you're interested in doing good effectively, send us a message or come along to an event!
