Congratulations to all of the 2018 @australianmuseum Eureka Prize winners, in particular to NYSF 1988 alumnus Dr Matthew Stocks whose team won the 2018 NSW Office of Environment and Heritage Eureka Prize last night for Environmental Research.
The @ScienceANU researchers, Professor Andrew Blakers, Dr Matthew Stocks and Bin Lu have challenged the barriers to renewable energy in Australia. Discovering 22,000 sites suitable for cost-effective pumped hydro energy storage they hav...e the profile of opportunities for pumped hydro investment within the clean energy industry.
Matthew spoke about his career and research at an NYSF alumni event in July this year as part of the NYSF Next Step program.

"In Australia, employers are demanding transferable enterprise skills from graduates across organisations 70% more than in the past. Skills like communication, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills. Employers value enterprise skills and are willing to pay a premium of over $8,800 for young job seekers who have them. Undertaking courses which enhance and embed these skills can increase the speed to full-time work by up to 17 months."

"I can see that everything I have achieved over the past few years has come from not just taking opportunities that are offered to me, but going out of my way to look for ways to involve myself." Matthew O'Brien, NYSF 2014 Alumnus

"I am volunteering to be a staffie because I want to ...remove the stigma that having a passion for STEM subjects is 'nerdy'."
We're ready for NYSF 2019 in January thanks to our student staff leaders.

I attended NSSS (as it was then) back in 1990. I remain friends with a number of my fellow students from that year and it has been a grounding in a lot of my endeavours. From a BSc in Geology and Geophysics to working in IT companies, renewable energy and now a major research chemical distributor, science has never been far from my path.

Now, with my son going into Year 12 in a couple of years time, I hope he may have some of the same opportunity to match minds and discover futures which are only just beginning.

I am so glad this esteemed institution is still going and moulding the minds of our future scientists. I could not recommend the opportunity more highly.
