Rotary Club Of Aurora Gungahlin Canberra Description

Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who transform their passions into relevant social causes to improve lives in communities. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else and to experience the self-fulfilment that comes from the process. It is a richly rewarding activity.

All the fun at The President's Chang-over Dinner at Hall.
Ron & Rowley with the club's banner, both were foundation members of the club and helped in the design of this unique banner. It was based on a series of banners designed by students from Burgmann Junior .College. Some design license was taken in adding the rolling hills of Gungahlin to the banner. It represents the sun rising over the Gungahlin Valley and the Canberra Flower Emblem , the Bluebell.

... The Rotary Club of Aurora Gungahlin (RCAG) will continue to operate in a relaxed environment with minimal ceremony. We will aim to build the Rotary brand in our area with our main emphasis to support our local Gungahlin community.
In doing so, we will maintain a close relationship with the other Rotary clubs in our regional group, supporting them when appropriate and involving them in our activities when appropriate. We will support other community organisations such as the Salvation Army, St Vincents and Lions when it is beneficial. We will expend a large proportion of our revenue on worthwhile causes, while maintaining a reserve for unforeseen circumstances.
We recognise that we are a Gungahlin based service organisation and we will provide maximum effort in supporting our local area. Our secondary focus will be on international and national initiatives where we have a viable interest. In addressing community needs, we will focus on activities which demonstrate sustainability and good governance.
The following list details current identified club projects, with the option to amend these if and when it is warranted:
International – East Timor Foundation – Polio Community; National Project – RCAG will investigate initiating a national project involving multiple clubs, which raises the profile of Rotary. Canberra – We will continue to support Karinya House and Home. Gungahlin – we will investigate a local need which does not presently have a large support base. It should aim at developing self-sufficiency Youth; Harrison School including; Mother’s / Father’s Day breakfasts, Dream Cricket, school sponsored service activities such as Purnululu school in WA, NYSF and hosting. Emergencies – shelter box, outright donations, etc … Ad hoc requests.

PDG Rowley Tompsett awards the PP Kevin Tompsett PHF Memorial Award to Rtn John Platten. With President Denis Waters.
The Citation reads The stand out performance during 2016-17 was made by Rotarian John Platten.
... He saw a need in terms of getting Rotary up in lights across the country. Just a minor ambition. Publicity and profile to encourage membership growth. He investigated the prospects of getting Automatic CPR, the LUCAS Two machine, in every ambulance across the country.
He personally investigated funding with Commonwealth and State governments. He arranged meetings with the ambulance services, government ministers and officials, cardiologists, emergency department doctors, remote area nurses and rural doctors, as well as the local import agent.
Despite his enthusiasm and commitment to the tasks needed to bring this project forward the powers that be holding the purse strings of government and the continual need for further and more research and the intransigence of union power brokers have held us back.
This is despite the Victorians purchasing 33 units before their research was completed. We could get no traction in NSW or the ACT.

The Proceeds for our upcoming Supper and Jazz Evening on Friday 23 February will be distribute to the following charities.
Home in Queanbeyan
Home opened its doors for the mentally ill in 2010. Home provides independent residential facility for people with mental illness in a 20-apartment facility which has 18 permanent homes and two for respite.... Home is the vision of Catholic Church priest and caretaker Father Peter Day who will also live there to provide 24-hour support for residents. At the opening in 2010 Fr Day said, "the dream of home is that there be a 24-hour presence, and as I say to people we're not here to help people or offer charity we're here to walk along side them". The charity costs over $200 000 a year to run, and is supported by a team of volunteers who provide support for residents in the form of counselling and companionship as well as day-to-day jobs like cooking. According to Manager Anne Prat, "residents have responsibilities like paying rent and utilities and she wants to encourage ownership among the people living there. "We're not going to do for the people, we are going to work with the people and help them and encourage them to look after their own apartment and help look after the grounds," she explained. "It will be their home and we want them to be proud of it.” The running costs are not supported by government and have to be raised by the rent payments, fundraising and by donations.
Karinya House Home for Mothers & Babies Inc. Karinya House supports pregnant and parenting women in crisis.
