Shirley Campbell Yoga Description

Shirley has seen many clients find relief from massage and comfort from being touched, whether its ease from tension due to physical injury, anxiety , depression or stress from being just too busy.

Yoga also is an enjoyable effective way to be more present, letting go of worries from the past and fear about the future.

Shirley provides Oncology Massage, Shiatsu and Yoga and Meditation support.
- Oncology Massage is a light tough massage using sweet almond oil.
- Shiatsu is a clothes-on style massage. (More info a bit further on)
- Dru Yoga is a gentle, flowing style of yoga.

With its foundations set firmly in ancient yogic tradition and its emphasis on soft, flowing movements, Dru Yoga can help increase energy levels, ease back pain and wash away stress. Suitable for people of all abilities, fitness levels and age groups.

Why is Oncology Massage relevant to more people than those with a diagnosis or history of cancer?
- It is appropriate for people in shock /trauma /physical and emotional pain / in overwhelm
- Oncology Massage (light touch masage) was the most effective form of massage in a large study for symptom control surveying 1, 300 patients over a 3 year period. There was significant improvement in pain, fatigue and anxiety levels, depression and insomnia. See brochure 'What is Oncology Massage' for this reference and other relevant medical research (Oncology Massage Ltd).

Shiatsu is a style of massage in which
- the client remains fully dressed, ideally in clothes that are loose or stretchy
- gentle stretch and pressure is applied around the body guided by the network of meridians or pathways on which the acupressure /acupuncture points lie
- a massage therapy session works most obviously with the physical body releasing areas of tightness ( or ‘stuckness’) in the muscles and joints
- shiatsu also highlights the emotional patterns triggered by the trauma.

In eastern medicine it is recognized that the organs of the body are susceptible to the effects of particular emotions e. g.
- lungs are effected by grief and loss (upper respiratory infections, pneumonia)
- kidneys are effected by fear and fright (lower back issues, pelvic organs)
- Liver is effected by anger and frustration (digestive issues, tightness and cramping).
- Shiatsu facilitates a return to balance, supporting the bodys own natural intelligence to continue the healing process.

Many medical practitioners are recommending that clients do yoga and /or meditation.

To complement Shiatsu therapy or Oncology Massage, Shirley offers one-to-one Dru Yoga and Meditation lessons for those who prefer more personal tuition or simply cannot make it to a class.

Clients can benefit from individual coaching with a view to joining a class further down the line.

Whether in a one-to-one session or in a class, Shirley can help a client be aware of how they breathe. It is so valuable to have time to practice being mindful of good breathing technique. To move, stretch and strengthen the physical body benefits emotional health as well as physical.

After periods of stress, yoga supports a return to balance of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system ie. to be in 'rest and digest' mode when appropriate rather than constantly on alert in fright /flight /freeze mode.

The benefits of yoga are referred to in the article 'The effectiveness of yoga for the improvement of well being and resilience to stress in the workplace' Hartfiel et al, 2011.

In summary, many clients find relief and appreciation for life again, often remarking 'Thank you, I feel more like myself '.
