About Tenants' Union Act

We are an independent community legal centre. We run the Tenants' Advice Service, providing free legal advice to people who rent their housing in the ACT.

We also provide information and workshops in tenancy law and issues

Tenants' Union Act Description

Through the Tenants' Advice Service we provide free information and legal advice to people who rent their housing in ACT. We provide advice to private, public and community housing tenants, as well as boarders and lodgers, people living in student accommodation, caravan parks and emergency accommodation.
We can provide you with information and advice about your rights and responsibilities when renting, and suggest ways you might be able to resolve problems. However we cannot provide legal advice via this page. Please see the "Need advice?" tab on our front page for information on how to seek advice.

Education
We also provide information on renters' rights and responsibilities and conduct free community education and training on renting issues for community groups, workplaces, schools and other groups of interested people.

Representation
We represent renters’ interests to a range of organisations - government and non-government at all levels of decision-making and participation: local, national and international. We provide a voice for renters and represent renters’ interests in changes to tenancy, occupancy and related law in the ACT. We liaise with the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Housing ACT, the ACT Government, the Office of Rental Bonds, the Real Estate Institute and other relevant bodies to ensure tenants’ rights are upheld and that rental housing is fair
