It was 2016 when Lisa Entwistle was diagnosed with breast cancer. While awaiting her test results, Lisa did what most of us would do – she hoped the diagnosis would be something far less sinister. This was the beginning of a long journey with cancer which still continues for Lisa, and her family today. It was at hospital that Lisa met Katie Evans, a Breast Care Nurse from The McGrath Foundation. The Athlete's Foot is proud to be partnering with the McGrath Foundation to raise much needed funds and to be sharing Lisa & Katie’s #MyFitStory. . . . #TheAthletesFootAu #TafxMcGrath #PerfectFit @mcgrathfoundation #mcgrathfoundationpartner #mcgrathfoundation

Trail running in Canberra - where do you start?
COMMENTS & SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!!!!!
Canberra has some awesome trail running available but sometimes you need to do a few with friends to get started or be pointed in the right direction. Most suburbs back onto reserves and fairly flat fire trails but with a small drive you can really find some awesome scenery. In this post I'll give you a few options from MILD-HARD but sometimes the best approach is to get out there and explore ...a little!
This is just my experience so don't take this as gospel but it should give you a good starting point or some ideas if you haven't done much yet. I'll group the following based on my experience over the years:
MILD: 4-10km - Cooleman Ridge (Chapman) - Complete the full loop for approx 10km loop or do an out and back to create your own distance. Fairly flat and easy road to run or walk.
MILD: 4-10km - Isaacs Ridge (Isaacs) - Start at either end and run/walk the pine forest trail if you do the full out & back it's approx 8-10km but again you can turn around earlier to shorten it.
MILD: - 8km return - One Tree Hill (Hall) - This trail is a fairly easy one and takes you to One Tree Hill Lookout at the back of Gungahlin.
MODERATE: 9km return - Square Rock (near Corin Forest) Park at the dirt carpark and follow the marked trail until you hit Flat Rock (also the turn around point) but be sure to take 10-15 mins to enjoy the view of the Brindabellas and get some good photos.
MODERATE: 10km Kambah Pool - Point Hut Crossing (Kambah-Gordon) - Park at Kambah Pool (leave a car at each end is my suggestion). This trail follows the Murrumbidgee river and at times has a good view of the river. A few good photo opportunities but be on the watch for snakes during summer.
HARD: 14km return - Namadgi Visitor Centre - Mt Tennent (Tharwa) - 14km return which takes you up and back if you start at Namadgi Visitor Centre. Some steep sections and small rock climbs but a good cardio challenge!
HARD: 15km return - Booroomba Rocks - Mt Tennent (near Honeysuckle Tracking Station past Tharwa). Park at Booroomba Rocks car park and follow the Australian Alps Walking Trail & Mt Tennent fire trail. Another cardio buster to test your fitness!
HARD: 16km Camelback Ridge (Tidbinbilla). Park at the bottom and start the VERY steep climb early in this run (walk...). Basically all uphill so take some water and be prepared for some serious muscle burning! Pack your phone for some pics and maybe a small snack at the top to enjoy the accomplishment!
FOOTWEAR SUGGESTIONS - For the MILD tracks you can get away with normal running or walking shoes but for the MODERATE & HARD trails I would suggest more trail specific shoes. Ask in store if you're unsure.....
* For MODERATE-HARD trails look for something with more tread and toe protection. Also ensure you leave enough volume in the toebox of your shoes to minimize rubbing as you tend to be up on your mid-forefoot more on harder trails.
