About Acon

We're Australia's largest HIV and sexuality and gender diverse health organisation.

Acon Description

We’re a New South Wales based health promotion organisation specialising in HIV prevention, HIV support and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) health.

Established in 1985 as the AIDS Council of NSW, we’re here to end HIV transmission among gay and homosexually active men, and promote the lifelong health of LGBTI people and people with HIV.

Our head office is in Sydney, we have offices in key regional locations and we provide services throughout NSW.

We’re primarily funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Ministry of Health and our work forms an integral part of the NSW Government’s HIV Strategy.

We’re Here For HIV Prevention
Advances in HIV testing and treatments mean we can end HIV transmission in NSW by 2020, but only if gay men test more, treat early and stay safe. We’re here to help them do this by promoting education campaigns, running gay health workshops, providing a range of support services and distributing hundreds of thousands of free condoms every year throughout NSW.

We’re Here For HIV Support
Over 12, 000 people in NSW live with HIV. We’re here to help people with HIV take control of their health, as well as the health of their partners, by providing up-to-date information as well as a range of programs and services.

We’re Here For LGBTI Health
Over 500, 000 LGBTI people live in NSW and tens of thousands more visit every year. We’re here to help LGBTI people take control of their health and wellbeing so they can look after themselves as well as their partners, family and friends. We provide the latest information on health issues affecting LGBTI people, and we offer a range of services delivered by caring people who genuinely understand the health issues affecting LGBTI people. Our services cover:

Sexual Health
Mental Health
Alcohol & Drugs
Safety & Inclusion
Ageing
Training & Consulting
Policy & Research

During The 6th Queer Screen Film Fest, 2018, make sure you don't miss out on the Australian premiere of 'Mario'!
Co-presented by Pride in Sport Australia, this smart and sexy film from Switzerland tells the story of Mario and Leon, two soccer players aspiring to the A-league. As their work and homelife collide, their chemistry on and off the field awakens in Mario a lust and desire for Leon that cannot be denied. Mario is a powerful story that sensitively examines love under pressure, and what we are willing to compromise for the heart.

Hey young queers – your rainbow family loves you! Why not think about cutting down or quitting smoking?
Here's the fourth and final in a series of little films ACON made in partnership with Twenty10, where we asked some young queers how they will go about reducing their tobacco usage. Special thanks to The Aurora Group for your support! #SmokeFreeStillFierce

Tomorrow afernoon!
Author Talk at the State Library of NSW: Shirleene Robinson & Noah Riseman in conversation with Kate Evans.
Most people have heard of the United States’ infamous ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy, yet few know about Australia’s own history of LGBT military service. In Serving in Silence? lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender servicemen and women share their personal stories for the first time. Tracing the ADF’s transformation to the inclusive organisation it is today, Serving in Silence? also highlights the pivotal role of military service in the lives of many LGBT Australians and how they have served their country with distinction.

"Bisexuality is still an uncomfortable term for many people. Conjuring up thoughts and questions in people’s minds, namely if bisexuality is even a thing. In order to transcend these negative stereotypes, education and role models are key. But we need role models that are up to the challenge and it’s no easy feat."

“We don’t judge people by their sexuality or gender. We won’t put up with any negativity in our store, or on our social media, that is homophobic or aggressive. We will just shut it down immediately,” Blackbird Corner's Nici Palmer on joining ACON's revamped 'Welcome Here Project'.

"Writer and food editor Tucker Shaw posted nearly two dozen tweets describing his experience losing friends and lovers to HIV. The thread was triggered by a conversation Shaw overheard on a train; two young men were discussing HIV, with one saying it 'galvanized the gay community' and 'paved the way to make things better, in the long run.'"

"[The inquiry] will also refer to a report, In Pursuit of Truth Justice, by the health advocacy ACON, whose president, Justin Koonin, said: 'Questions remain and we are hopeful that this inquiry will finally deliver some answers. This is an important step towards justice and healing.'"

"If you don’t put 'No Asians' in your profile, that doesn’t mean you have to fuck Asians now. It just means I don’t have to see it."
"It is not racist to not be attracted to me personally. But for you to say 'I know what every Asian guy looks like and I know for a fact that I would not be attracted to any of them…', like that comes from a racist place because you don’t know what we all look like. That’s ugly."

I am totally fed up with ACON, they do nothing for transgender women, I went to a transgender picnic that turned out to be a mens bbq, I emailed the organizer to thank him and to discuss options going forward, he did not bother to reply to me. Transgender females have similar issue to gay men, however ACON just tells us to go see community health. Thanks ACON for nothing.
