I am relatively new to the spoken word scene, having organised and performed in two collaborative feature events through Monash Uni student theatre and performed at various open mics around Melbourne. I am originally from Zimbabwe but consider myself a bit of a cultural nomad. My content is heavily influenced by my exploration of cultural identity and human relationships, my journey with substance abuse and recovery and as an aperture through which I find relatability in the world.

Umulkhayr Hassan, more commonly known as Baasto, is an emerging neo soul and spoken word artist. Gracing the Melbourne music and poetry landscape with her Lauryn Hill like soft tones and Erykah Badu vibes - she brings a warm and playful energy to the stage. Combining funky soulful rhythms with elements from her Somali roots Baasto is developing a juicy sound that deftly reflects her identity. Often seen performing alongside local favourites such as Yusuf Harare Jnr, Whosane, and Creamy Spies, the 24 year old is undoubtedly set to establish herself as a talented artist in her own right.
Tickets $10 (cash only) at the door.
