One of our favorite places to visit as a family. Always busy & full of lovely artworks! Truly worth a visit. Its family friendly even with a toddler running around. Huge spaces!

Gorgeous, historic building. Marvelous place to spend an afternoon. They have an extensive varied permanent collection including a LARGE collection of aboriginal art. They have gorgeous temporary exhibits. My favorite exhibit here was several years ago when they had some of the Terracotta Warriors from China.

Went to a great exhibit and talk by disabled artists called Emerge. So nice to c us disabled folk being included. The accessibility has improved from years back

I've been to this place a lot of times. It's generally a nice art gallery, pretty pictures and interesting exhibits. I like the Japanese section downstairs, but it's rarely updated. There is also a half decent cafeteria, but nothing to write home about.

With free entry, this is absolutely a must visit for anyone coming to Sydney.

Had a perfect day at the Gallery today, celebrating a friend's 83rd birthday. Rembrandt & the Dutch Golden Age .exhibition has transported us into the world of the 17th century Dutch Republic
We enjoyed light lunch at the Cafe at the Gallery and admired the little veggie patch
I would love to join the Wednesday drawing workshop holding a glass of wine in one hand and a pencil in the other. I saw a TV documentary on similar very successful art workshops in US
Lots of fun in a relaxed atmosphere.

would like to follow up with the

Great place to view artwork. The food in the restaurant is very good and the service excellent. Great place to unwind and if you have company even better. I was on my own still good the waitress very polite and helpful.

Sydney and Melbourne share at least one thing in common. Amazing venues for the arts. In Melbourne's case it's the natural history type of building. For Sydney it's a gorgeous art museum with an amazing insider and out.

User

This was our second or third visit to one of our favourite galleries. The art collection is magnificent, containing Australian and European art. As a European I can 'fill in the gaps' in my knowledge. The restaurant is good, with outdoor, rooftop, seating as well as indoor. There is a good gift shop and the gallery is en route to another of our favourites, the Botanical Gardens.

User

Wonderful place to spend a few hours at! A good collection of art from around the globe. Wide spaces and seats within gallery rooms for visitors to sit and view the art work. The gift shop has a good selection of items for sale.

The gallery has different wings for different flavors, which are free, e.g. European Victorian, Asian, Aboriginal, Australian, Modern and Contemporary. They also have paid exhibitions. Bags and backpacks are left in the entrance wardrobe for free. The temperature inside is always good as to protect the artwork. So it's recommended on cold or really warm days.

User

I love this gallery especially the contemporary art section. The entrance is free & they do change the collections every now & then. Best way is to take train to Martin Place, go through the hospital and walk across the Domain.

User

I love this gallery. The exhibitions they have are constantly changing. There's always something new to see. They have a great range of free stuff to see. There are also ticketed exhibitions too. Great for locals and international visitors. Wide range of modern and classic art.

User

Beautiful collection of Australian art with free admission! Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. We also took part in a free tour, which run hourly, and was very informative. An excellent rainy day activity!

User

A place for classical, modern and contemporary art, from some local home gown artists, to the most important world artists. A short walk from the heart of Sydney along Art Gallery Rd, next to the Domain, and the Botanical Gardens, with views to the Opera house & the Sydney Harbour Bridge. A great way to spend an afternoon.

With two dogs, one cat and one bird among this year's Archibald Prize finalists, it is worth talking about the role of pets, and animals in general, in the prize.

John Russell was friends with art giants Vincent van Gogh, Auguste Rodin and Claude Monet, who celebrated his work. Now the Sydney-born painter's work is taking centre stage, writes Sarah Turnbull.

"Have you ever felt drawn to a location? Mount Buffalo, in central Victoria, is the place for me." says artist Phillip Edwards. "'Glory be, water tree' was documented on a five-hour snow hike in late July. On the cusp of spring, the snow had begun to melt, with rivulets flowing, pools of free and frozen water, and a peaceful stillness. My attraction to Mount Buffalo is its stillness – a place of pure distraction, not of day-to-day things but to myself… my essence…"

It’s truly extraordinary how much information there is locked within a piece of wood. To help unlock the secrets of the Gallery’s Henry VIII portrait, which is painted on an oak panel, we turned to dendrochronology or tree-ring dating.

Mary Webb's arresting artwork 'Joie de vivre' 1958 – with its pastel hues and soft-edged cloud-like forms – represents her most significant painterly achievement, and a singular contribution to Australian abstraction. Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn, master of light and shade, was born on this day in 1606. This most famous of Rembrandt’s landscapes must also rank as one of the most majestic and deeply evocative representations of the natural world ever committed to paper. In 'The three trees', his largest landscape print, Rembrandt portrays a limitless view of Dutch scenery, dramatically orchestrated with marked contrasts of light and dark and other atmospheric effects. It is an ecstatic celebration of the natural world, vividly depicted in all its changeability and powerful vitality. Read more: http://bit.ly/2uiycgp

Austrian artist Gustav Klimt was born on this day in 1862. This highly stylised yet superbly fluent pencil drawing is one of numerous figure studies related to Klimt’s most controversial public commission: the so-called ‘faculty paintings’ for the University of Vienna. Lucienne Rickard’s drawings are characterised by an obsessive and laborious process of becoming. Beginning with a single mark, she gradually builds them up over a period of months. Slowly contour and shape emerge, density and volume follow, until at last an image is formed. New on the Gallery blog: mystery surrounds the Gallery’s portrait of Henry VIII. To get closer to the truth – and to help us plan its much-needed conservation treatment – we needed to get much, much closer to the painting itself...

Well done art gallery! You finally inspired me to get out to see an exhibition, with a large advertising campaign for the lady & the unicorn, only to get here & find it’s a timed exhibition & I can’t get in for 2 hours!!! Perhaps next time you might want to put that in large letters on your advertisements!!! Don’t worry I won’t bother coming next time!
