Australian Monarchist League Description

The primary purpose of the Australian Monarchist League is to educate and inform the Australian public on Australia's history and particularly on the Australian Constitution, to disseminate literature and to maintain a library on Australian colonial and federation history and the Constitution.

Established in Australia in 1943 for the encouragement of Literature and to uphold the educational and cultural aspects of our Constitutional Monarchy, AML has today morphed into a powerful and effective not-for-profit lobbyist group that lobbies State and Federal Governments to reverse decades of ‘republicanism by stealth’ by appropriately recognising our Sovereign, Royal Family and traditional institutions; to uphold the principles of the Westminster System we have inherited; and the concept of competitive federalism on which the Commonwealth of Australia was founded.

For instance:

The League has sponsored the establishment of The Foundation for Australian Constitutional Research and Studies, to, without bias, encourage young people to study the Constitution and to understand the implications of potential change which we believe is of particular importance when only 18% of the population are reported to know something about our Constitution or system of Government. Each year the Foundation organises a very popular Essay Competition on Constitutional subjects amongst all High Schools in Australia.

When the Keating Government ordered Commonwealth Government Bookshops to stop selling photographs of The Queen, resulting in members of the public finding it virtually impossible to obtain pictures of their Sovereign, the Monarchist League reproduced and distributed Sir William Dargie's renowned portrait of Her Majesty in the Australian Wattle Dress.

The Australian Monarchist League has no paid staff whatsoever and we operate solely on voluntary support. Our membership is open to any Australian interested in finding out how our Constitution came about and what it means in simple, easy to understand English.
