About Australian Recovery Centres

Australian Recovery Centres – retreat centres dedicated to addiction recovery. Providing residential retreats for people trapped by obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours as well as training programs and supervision for health professionals. Australian Recovery Centres is a not-for-profit, registered charity that provides residential retreats based on the InterACT programme originally developed by psychologist Jim Maclaine. This unique programme involves a 9-day intensive residential retreat in which participants co-create a self-help process in a supportive environment where they can focus entirely on addressing their issues without the distractions of everyday life and the pressures it brings. The Australian Recovery Centres' approach involves a small-group setting which provides crucial encouragement, mirroring and support with manageable numbers. The maximum is 8 participants per retreat, ensuring personalised care for each individual. One benefit of this shorter than usual retreat is that participants instinctively know and are reminded from the day they arrive that it is their action plan upon discharge that will keep them in recovery. Ongoing support is crucial and once back home consists of sharing daily action plans and end of day check-ins. Community, accountability, therapy, 12-step or other support meetings make up a workable plan. The Australian Recovery Centres approach is new and different from other offerings in that it requires a shorter investment of time up front. The InterACT programme itself is well established, as it was offered in a number of private hospitals in 1980's - 2000's under the direction of psychologist Jim Maclaine. Melinda Lake, the founder and Head Psychologist at Australian Recovery Centres, has 20 years' as a psychologist and was mentored by Jim Maclaine for several years. Recognising that her mission was to continue Jim Maclaine's work after he passed away, Melinda founded Australian Recovery Centres with her partner Paul Harrison. Melinda is supported by an exceptional group of experienced clinicians on the Australia Recover Centres' Board of Directors. Between them, they bring well over 100 years of experience working in the Drug and Alcohol field. Australian Recovery only employs health professionals registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) e. g. Psychologists, or members of PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia). Employees undertake continued professional development and adhere to a strict code of ethics. Australian Recovery Centres also provide intensive training retreats to upskill mental health professionals interested in addiction treatment. Melinda Lake is a Psychology Board of Australia approved supervisor and offers both individual supervision and group supervision retreats at the Recovery Centre. Australian Recovery is a charity that doesn't receive government funding – participants pay a fee for the retreat.
