The longer you work together the greater the likelihood you will start dressing similarly 🧐😊#grey

Busy weekend in #melbourne in my role as Vice President Communications for Speech Pathology Australia with the Ethics Board. I’m lucky to work with the many dedicated professionals who have given, and continue to give so much to the profession.

Haniya our #slp2b from @sydney_uni shares what communication access means to her as @speechpathaus #SPWeek comes to a close. 😊😊😊😊😊🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣T o me, communication access is when an individual feels empowered to use language to interact with the world around them with ease- be it through spoken words, sign language or through technological devices. Having the means to describe your current state, your thoughts and intentions is extremely important, from the child who is learning to f...ollow instructions at school, to the youth who is learning to socialise better with friends, to the adult who is learning to make functional and meaningful changes to their daily life. A Speech Pathologist helps to achieve this by working collaboratively with an individual and family to set common goals that will result in the biggest gains for the client. The beauty of the work that Speech Pathologists do is in the qualitative changes that are seen in their clients’ lives. That is why we do what we do!

A word from Scott for @speechpathaus #SPWeek Scott, our admin assistant shares why it is important that people have ways to communicate. So people are able to: -Share emotions, feelings, happiness and news. -Relate, share and connect with others. -Meet new people/friends.... -Learn new things, build vocabulary.
Why is communication important to me?
Because: -I need to learn and know what other people are doing or feeling. -It allows me to participate in social interaction/events. -Sometimes I feel trapped inside so having ways to communicate allows me to break free and express what I’m trying to say. Thanks Scott. Always appreciate your unique perspective.

Best @speechpathaus #SPWeek at @rathasplace to see #communicationaccess in action. The cafe is unique in that they train and employ staff with intellectual and learning disabilities. Our wait staff were amazing (and had a great sense of humour) The coffee ☕️ was perfect. We are talking with the management about how we can support #communicationaccess at the cafe. Our @sydney_uni #speechpathology students Kenny and Stephanie will work with Carly on this project. Once we are in the doing phase we promise to share some photos. Put this cafe on your must visit list and support a unique and outstanding initiative.

Here’s a great share from Allison (SP) and Mel (OT). Remember @speechpathaus #SPWeek the week. Communication access is communication for all! From Allison and I -
All individuals should have the right to express themselves - whether it be about their feelings or to share their opinions. For those who have difficulty expressing themselves through verbal means, visuals provide an opportunity to use their voice and be heard by others around them. In this activity, our #speechpathologist and #occupationaltherapist are working to increase our client's expression of his emotions, along with increasing his ability to express his opinion about food items he does and does not like.

Dorothy Bishop talks about terminology and the current agreed term- Developmental Language Disorder. Please share so we can continue to build consistent terminology use. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ1dHS1X8 jg

Thanks Priscilla for sharing this visually supported #rainbowfish #language task Priscilla described it as ....”Supporting phrase development and vocabulary with visuals and puppet props for SPA week” #communicationaccess SPWeek

Great morning teaching at Macquarie Uni in the #MSLP course. My dream job- intersection of teaching/speech pathology and business. Today we shared ideas on what is involved in the business of #speechpathology

You know you’re a diehard #slp when you make #visuals for your own children. I’m a little tired of reminding the little people in the house 🏠 when music practice has to be done. 🎸 🎹 I’m hoping this will build some #autonomy and #ownership of responsibilities. (That and I love Boardmaking and laminating stuff!)

Who said you need fancy equipment to stimulate language? #Bubbles are a winner every time! Playing with family makes for the perfect excuse to have some time out from paperwork. #bilabials #firstwords #grandnephew

Tahlia (Sydney Uni student on placement) shares what communication access means to her. Happy #SPWeek. Communication access is a key priority for Australian health, because at some stage in their life, 1 in 7 Australians will have a communication difficulty, which affects their ability to understand others, or to effectively get their message across. The presence of barriers imposed by the environment, by other people and by the nature of the difficulty itself, ma...kes communication access a daily challenge.
Speech pathologists play a key role in addressing the inequalities of communication access, working closely beside people with communication difficulties to navigate the barriers they face everyday. With the advent of new technologies, there are constantly new methods being trialled and employed that help people with communication difficulties to access that which is often taken for granted in everyday life. Achieving greater access to communication is a key concern for all ages that work with a Speech Pathologist, and therefore continuing the work to address this inequality is such a vital target for the healthcare system. Thanks Tahlia for your reflection 🐝

Kenny, a @sydney_uni #speechpathology student on #clinicalplacement with us shares what #communicationaccess means to him as we begin @speechpathaus #SPWeek Thanks Kenny for advocating for #humanrights to #communicate

User

#communication #access should be open to all members of our community. Particularly those who are vulnerable. #SPweek #justice #juvenilejustice #speechpathology

User

Speech Pathology Week has commenced. Watch this video and share widely. Let the wider community better understand how speech pathologists ensure all members of our community exercise their human right to communicate. #SPWeek

User

What does communication access mean to you? To me it means that we provide opportunities for everyone (big and small) in our community to communicate needs and opinions.
It also makes an assumption that all forms of communication are valued regardless of their frequency of use.
