Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival Description

The Bellingen Readers & Writers Festival is Australia's newest literary event. The inaugural Festival was staged in the magnificent environs of the Coffs Coast, Bellingen and Dorrigo from April, 2011.

The 2013 Event will again start on Friday 22nd March and all events end Sunday 24th 2013. Tickets for early bird on sale 10th December 2012.

The festival is a celebration of Australian writing in all its forms and will feature many established and emerging Australian writers. Don't miss three days of events including readings, panels, forums and feasts, workshops, multimedia, theatre, film and spoken word performances.

Byron Writers Festival Presents: Opportunities in Bellingen
Editorial consultations in Bellingen
A 30-minute, face-to-face editorial consultation can help you understand what is working well in your manuscript, and what may need further development in order to capture the curiosity and attention of a publisher/agent or general reader. Feedback is given on the first 4000 words of the manuscript and your synopsis, and the session provides an opportunity to discuss any questions... you may have and to tease out the direction your work might take.
Please note, if your material is not submitted by the 27 August, we cannot guarantee your assessor will have time to review them before your appointment. For more information please go to: http://byronwritersfestival.com/…/edito rial-consultations-…/
Structural Editing for Writers in Bellingen Most writers have some sort of notion that their manuscript will require a structural edit, but often they have little understanding of what this actually means. This workshop explains structural editing, what role it plays in manuscript development, how to go about it, and how to survive it. Structural editing involves looking at the story as a whole and considering aspects such as story arc, expression of themes, character development, point of view, backstory, voice and pacing. It concerns recognising what is working well in the manuscript and what needs further attention. I offer practical strategies to guide writers through a step-by-step process that covers finding fresh eyes, developing critical reading skills, preparing for a detailed read through, the questions to ask as you read your latest draft, and how to approach the next draft. The workshop also explores the sometimes challenging inner terrain that underlies the manuscript development process. This workshop is designed for writers of fiction and narrative non-fiction who have a complete draft of their manuscript. Participants will work on the first 10,000 words of their manuscript during the workshop to practise different structural editing strategies and tools discussed.
When: Saturday 8 September Time: 10am – 4pm Venue: Bellingen Youth Hub

“The main reason I wrote this book on my phone, and sent it out bit by bit, was really that I didn’t feel safe with the guards and authorities,” Boochani told Guardian Australia.
