What do you do once all your ideas for being environmentally sustainable are exhausted?
We think to ourselves; yes we recycle paper in our office and yes we've got green energy in our office or factory and we've really done as much as we possibly can with our environmental performance, so where do we go from here?
So I've got some challenging questions for you;
... What's happening in your supply chain?
Is your supply chain both before and after your business?
What's happening in your client's supply chain?
How can you affect your customer's environmental performance?
How can you affect your supplier's environmental performance?
Recently I met with a really interesting client that does water treatment analysis and proposes options for different cities to treat the drinking water that comes out of the taps in all of the great residences, factories, and businesses in those regional towns. So what we were looking at is that their service is to give those cities and towns an options analysis, and they were saying "well we recycle all the paper and we do all the great stuff in our office".
When we look at ISO14001 environmental management systems, It asks us to consider how we can affect our customer's environmental performance.
That's an opportunity for you to think about how can you affect your customers & suppliers environmental performance, and in their situation they've got a huge ability based on the recommendations that they make to change, improve or affect the energy consumption of their customers.
So if you're a builder in a construction company, if you're in warehousing, if you're in transport or if you're in health care, have a think about how you impact the energy consumption, the transport costs, the freight costs, the greenhouse gas emissions of your customers based on your choices and recommendations.
How can YOU be more effective in your skills of influence to your customers to help them improve and build a long-standing, great partnership with those customers and suppliers?

It's widely acknowledged that innovation comes from within organizations and the 4th critical success factor of ISO 9001 is the communication & consultation of the people doing the work.
So often while they might not have the direct solutions, they can definitely discuss things like what's really frustrating, what doesn't work well and maybe the small adjustments that need to be made in y...our customer service, processing, manufacturing etc depending on the industry you might be in.
Put it out to the organization, what do you think we could innovate, what could be improved, what could be some efficiencies, because you will find and I've heard it a lot, regular comments from people like; "so much money gets wasted, so much time gets wasted, it's so frustrating" and those are little indicators of where to start.
You don't necessarily need to look to hear the solutions from with-in the business but they can be little signals and little communications of things that could be improved in the organization.
So the leader might set the strategic direction and then the teams come along with all the micro suggestions about how each of those things within that division of the business can be improved at a micro level.
I can definitely say that success factor number four is one of the most critical parts of looking at communication and consultation with workers in the organization and asking for suggestions for innovation or areas that need attention.

UNDERSTAND COMMUNICATION IN ISO 9001 TERMS?
What I've observed and it makes me a little bit frustrated, is lots of organizations in the ISO 9001 quality management world have put way too much effort into developing policies and procedures.
I know many CEO's who are frustrated with their teams because, and I quote "I put a policy in place and no one follows it".
... Well, of course, they don't because as humans the vast majority of us are turned to effective communication methods to absorb our information and one of the cool things about using video, is not only can I communicate to you verbally, but also all my body language. I can more effectively get my message across to you in this type of medium.
It's really hard to write a document and convey this much emotion and enthusiasm, and we're not professional writers and we're not trained to be professional writers, like the amazing bestselling authors that write beautiful novels, so what we want to be thinking about is well what is our most effective way to communicate and not only that more importantly we want thinking about our teams and our audience out in the business.
What is the most effective way to communicate to them and how do they want to be communicated to and you don't necessarily need to ask them but you could watch, watch what they do in their lunch break watch the style of communication that they're consuming on their way to work or their way home from work, on their commute.
I can almost guarantee a vast majority of people consuming information now, they are using what? they're using a smartphone and they're watching video because humans like to consume eye contact they like to hear vocal tone and inflection they like colours and they like moving pictures so with regards to communication one of the most critical success factors in your Quality Assurance System is thinking about effective communication so don't go and write thousands of policies and procedures have a think about your audience.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR INFORMATION ASSETS?
ISO 27001 is the information security management system standard that's apart of the ISO family of standards for all things risk management.
ISO 27001 is all about managing the risks associated with your information assets, so all of the data, all of the electronic information and even to a certain extent the hardcopy information you've got in your organization.
... Now a lot of that information could be things like customers details, financial details, banking details and even your commercial intellectual property that you use to run your organization, so ISO 27001 is targeted at all of that information all of your information assets.
ISO 27001 follows a risk management framework, similar to an ISO 9001 quality management system standard or an ISO 45001 OH&S management system or an ISO 14001 environmental management system.
All of these standards follow a risk management framework, generically if you look at ISO 31000 which has been international risk management framework, all of these management systems specifications are following that same framework. These same steps and the same process is going to give you positive business improvement outcomes.
Looking at ISO 27001, the process will look like; you put your management system together, you think about your information security risks and start to identify and implement the controls that you're going to use in your organization to manage any threats or risks associated with your information security management responsibilities and requirements.
Setting up a dashboards is really important, monitoring statistics around when you look at your threats and risks, how often you monitor your statistics around, is your information security management system performing for you, is it managing your issues, are you having issues and also looking at how you improve your organization, so how often do you identify opportunities for improvement, how often do you execute and implement on those opportunities for improvement.

2 TIPS YOU NEED TO WORK SAFELY
Here are some things to ask yourself on a day-to-day.
1. Has anyone ever been hurt doing the thing you're about to do?
... The task, the job, the exercise. If you're in construction, if you're in a warehouse or if you're in a dangerous environment, has anybody ever been hurt doing what you're about to do?
If the answer is yes, then how can you avoid getting hurt in that same way. That's what risk management and risk assessments all about.
2. Competency; have I got the training? have I got the tickets? have I got the competencies that I need to do the tasks I'm about to do?
Often we see that people are really motivated and keen to just get the job done, let's just get on with it.
I can't stress enough how important it is to get the training that you need to, make sure you're compliant, you have the tickets, the qualifications.
