About Bitter Phew

Craft Beer Bar - Better Beer

Bitter Phew Description

Escape the bustle of Oxford Street and head upstairs into our little pocket of 1920’s inspired charm. Bitter Phew is a calm, New York-warehouse inspired craft beer venue. A solid, wooden bar reaches out towards expansive windows drawing in the light of Darlinghurst. Relax and unwind with your favourite beer while enjoying the view or head out the back to a terrace lined with herbs and greenery, affectionately dubbed “The Snicket” by staff.

We welcome all beer enthusiasts to come in and experience our selection of the finest local and international boutique beers. We have 12 taps rotating with the purpose and passion of making the world of craft beer accessible to Sydneysiders.

However, fresh, tasty craft beer and somewhere comfortable and pleasing to drink is not our only vice, and we know everyone else has other indulgences too. We have also strived to ensure our wine selection and food menu are on par with the level of quality we offer in our beers. So that no matter what you feel like on the night, you are sure to walk away satisfied

The first day back at work after a long weekend can be tough.
So we tried to make it a bit easier for ourselves by having a staff training session.
We popped a bottle of the Oude Geuzestekerij De Cam Gooik Kriek Lambiek, and ooh boy - we were treated with a real yum beer. Pouring a deep maroon colour with a pink head, and a strong cherry aroma - this is a beautiful, jammy sour with a nice dry oaky finish.

Mornington Peninsula Brewery’s Brown Ale is a cult classic amongst Australian beer lovers. Brewed using imported English ale malts - the Brown is a full-flavoured beer with toffee aromas, matched with notes of brown sugar and raisins.
For their 8th birthday the brewers down at Mornington wanted to step things up a bit. They've created an 8% Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Brown beast. And we've got a keg to celebrate!
We also secured a phresh keg of their latest speciality rele...ase, the Hamfish Brut IPA. You can expect a dry and spritzy beer with a distinctively fruity fragrance.
On tap at Bitter Phew from this Saturday September 29.

On Mondays we pour schooners and sell them for the same price as 330ml beers. And we do it without blinking (or looking at what we’re doing).
Don’t believe us, come and watch us. The bar is open from 5pm.

If you’re the kind of person that needs a 12% Imperial Stout to kick start their Sunday, then you’re our kind of person.
With a whole heap of pecan extract and molasses added, Evil Twin Brewing’s Even More Pecan Pie Jesus is a thick and sticky heavenly pleasure.

Every now and then it’s nice to return to an old faithful, classic beer. A beer that is familiar and trustworthy. A faultless beer that has stood the test of time.
For us, Brasserie D’Achouffe’s La Chouffe Blonde Ale is one of those beers.
With a slight hoppy bitterness, combining notes of fresh coriander with fruity tones - this is a refreshing and zesty 8% bevvy that is always a pleasure to return to.

At the end of a long week, we like to wind down with a nice cold beer. But occasionally we fancy a G&T. And sometimes we want both. All at once.
California’s Anderson Valley Brewing have allowed our Friday dreams become a delicious and refreshing reality with their G&T Gose.
We’ve found it goes well with a sneaky shot of Australian gin dropped into it as well. Tom is a fan of the Four Pillars Gin, while Hutch is more of a Adelaide Hills Distillery type of guy.
... Give it a try, you deserve it.

Is there anything better than sitting on the back deck on a summer afternoon while sinking your teeth into a big juicy mango, and feeling that sweet sticky juice drip off your chin?
Yes. It’s drinking a beer a fresh hazy Mango New England IPA brewed with Lactose, and hopped with Galaxy, Citra and Amarillo.
Luckily for you fine folk, Stone & Wood Brewing have made this beer - and we’re going to have it on tap for you at Bitter Phew from 3pm this Thursday.

You don’t often see bottles from Ohio’s Jackie O's Brewery in Sydney.
But, would you just have a look at the two newest additions to our immense bottle list.
‘Oil of Aphrodite’ and ‘Dark Apparition’ are two big Imperial Stouts from this internationally renowned brewery.
... 'Aphrodite' has been brewed with locally harvested black walnuts and Belgian candied syrup to create a sweet and nutty taste sensation. While 'Apparition' have used a total of seven different malts to make a complex stout with flavours of coffee, chocolate and molasses.
They are both very yum, and you should probably try them before Dylan drinks them all.
