Our Junior Bookclub meet once a month to have afternoon tea and chat about the book we have all just read. Everyone meets at Book Bazaar just after 4 depending on their school buses and then we head across to 304 on West for afternoon tea and discussion at around 4:05pm. The cost is $20 and includes the book and afternoon tea. New members are always welcome to message us and get started on the next book.
Book Description: The Girl Who Drank The Moon by Kelly Barnhill
Every... year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is in fact a good witch who shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon. Xan rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna's thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge - with dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Deadly birds with uncertain intentions flock nearby. A volcano, quiet for centuries, rumbles just beneath the earth's surface. And the woman with the Tiger's heart is on the prowl

We were lucky enough to go to a great event put on by Browse last night - "An Inspirational Evening with Emma Isaacs" of Business Chicks fame. Shauna Ryan from Strong Woman spoke and then the lovely Melinda Schneider sang as well as talking about her story and her new single supporting #NowAustralia. Emma Isaacs was the final speaker and spoke of the power of Winging It and heading towards the edge where the magic is. It was wonderful to meet so many amazing women, and a few men! Thanks Belle Property Killcare for buying a pile of books for your staff xxx Pan Macmillan Australia

Come and join us at the Erina Centre to hear Richard Glover talk about Australia in the 60's and 70s and why so many have such nostalgia for that time. Drinks and nibbles will be provided beforehand. Doors open at 3:15pm for a 3:30pm start. The event is free but you must book a seat. (Ticket link to come closer to the date)
The new book from the bestselling author of Flesh Wounds. A funny and frank look at the way Australia used to be - and just how far we have come. 'It wa...s simpler time'. We had more fun back then'. 'Everyone could afford a house'.There's plenty of nostalgia right now for the Australia of the past, but what was it really like?
In The Land Before Avocado, Richard Glover takes a journey to an almost unrecognisable Australia. It's a vivid portrait of a quite peculiar land: a place that is scary and weird, dangerous and incomprehensible, and, now and then, surprisingly appealing. It's the Australia of his childhood. The Australia of the late '60s and early '70s.Let's break the news now: they didn't have avocado. It's a place of funny clothing and food that was appalling, but amusingly so. It also the land of staggeringly awful attitudes - often enshrined in law - towards anybody who didn't fit in.
The Land Before Avocado will make you laugh and cry, be angry and inspired. And leave you wondering how bizarre things were, not so long ago. Most of all it will make you realise how far we've come - and how much further we can go.
'This is vintage Glover - warm, wise and very, very funny. Brimming with excruciating insights into life in the late sixties and early seventies, The Land Before Avocado explains why this was the cultural revolution we had to have' Hugh Mackay

** Booked Out - Hoping to add more seats or a new date soon!
Come and join us at the Erina Centre to hear Father Rod Bower introduce us to his newly published book 'Outspoken'. Outspoken' is a unique book that looks at the inspiring evolution of a man set on making the world a better place, one sign at a time. Drinks and nibbles will be provided beforehand. Doors open at 5:45pm for a 6pm start. The event is free but you must book a seat.
... 'Outspoken' is part life story, part love story, part manifesto. It is the story of Father Rod, known for his controversial roadside signs on display outside the Gosford Anglican Church. It tells of his childhood growing up in an adopted family, coping with the sudden loss of his father, leaving school at sixteen, his search for his birth mother and his journey to becoming a priest.
The controversial roadside signs cover many topics including gun control, climate change, Islamophobia, marriage equality, Indigenous rights, domestic violence and asylum seekers. These signs guide the development of his book which expresses a fresh, considered religious perspective on each of these controversial issues.
We are looking forward to an evening of positivity, compassion and warmth.
