About Careertrackers Indigenous Internship Program

CareerTrackers works with Indigenous university students to create internship opportunities. Students complete a 12 week paid internship during university breaks and participate in a year round program of support, training and leadership development.

Careertrackers Indigenous Internship Program Description

CareerTrackers is a national non-profit organisation. Our vision is to inspire excellence through the power of creating an opportunity.

CareerTrackers was founded in 2009 and began working with just 18 students across 9 companies. Today we work with 1, 354 students and partner with 108 employers. Our students study at 37 universities across Australia. There are 485 Alumni of CareerTrackers and there will be more than 200 new graduates of the program who commence full-time work every year.

CareerTrackers interns are working with companies of all sizes across a range of fields including Westpac, Lendlease, Qantas, Telstra, Herbert Smith Freehills, Nous Group, Social Ventures Australia and Sydney Theatre Company.

CareerTrackers is modeled off of INROADS, a program based in the US that designed to address the lack of ethnic diversity in corporate America.

Inspiring words from our alumni Ashleigh Lindsay, solicitor at Herbert Smith Freehills, on her experience in the legal industry.

Darwin born, now Victoria-based University of Melbourne student, Kinji (studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in Zoology) presented to her team at GHD Group, where she interned with the Natural Resources team.
She used her passion for bugs to tell us all about the origin of the word Wurundjeri (wurun meaning Manna Gum and djeri, which is a grub found in the tree) and shared her desire to see more of Ganma (Yolngu word for two-way sharing) & collaboration between the Traditional Land Owners and ecologists.

Winter Internships are coming to an end, which means it's time for Presentations!
As part of the internship program, students present back to their teams sharing their reflections on their internship experience and the key things they have learnt. It's also a great opportunity for our interns to share a little bit about themselves and, of course, to thank their teams for their support and guidance throughout the internship.

Yesterday CareerTrackers' interns in Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra had the opportunity to participate in a day of leadership and professional development training through our Program Day.
Check out some of these snaps, as the teams worked together to build rocket ships, negotiate currency trades and navigate uncharted territory.
A big thank you to our partners for hosting us and for helping with the facilitation of the workshops!

"No one from my family had completed university... I wanted to get a degree so I could step up for my community and say ‘if I can do it, you can do it too.’ I can help show them it’s possible to go to uni, and it’s not as difficult as people make it out to be."
Anthony is on the road to becoming an engineer through the UTS Insearch program and his internship with Lendlease. What a fantastic role model for our community!

Yesterday was our SA Program Day!
It was a great opportunity for our Adelaide community to connect, develop new skills and learn from each other.
A big thanks to the University of South Australia for hosting us, to Donna and Tracy from IAG for facilitating and to Sophie and Sheryl for sharing so openly during the panel. And, of course, thank you to all of our interns who came along!

At CareerTrackers, we know the importance of family. Today Kanga was able to share his internship experience with the ones he cares for the most.
“On our wedding day, Kanga was so nervous to speak in front of our family and friends. I have watched him grow thanks to the support of the Audit Office and the CareerTrackers Program. I’m so proud of him today, presenting in front of us all” - Cassy Cooley, Kanga’s wife.

“The internship is a really great foot in the door. The opportunity to build relationships and network is something I wouldn’t get without it” Maneka says. Rubbing shoulders with some of Australia’s foremost business and professional figures through the internship program, she’s fearless in her approach to learning.
“At the LDI (Leadership Development Institute) gala, it’s a really good place to network. There were two guys standing together talking and I thought they looked... important so I introduced myself to them … it was former CEO of Origin Energy, Grant King, and CEO of The Australian, Nicholas Gray”
- Maneka Ladharam, Australian Unity Intern, studying Arts/Law at Monash University.

What a week! This NAIDOC our interns, alumni and partners have learnt about and celebrated amazing Indigenous women, shared their own stories, spoken on panels, helped launch a RAP, received awards, baked cakes and ran workshops with High School students.
We can't wait to build on this positive energy as we continue to work with our CareerTrackers Community to change the landscape not only of corporate Australia but of wider Australian society.

Jett Hobbs left school in Year 9, played footy for Penrith and worked as an arborist before heading to university to study a B. Applied Finance/B. Actuarial Studies. He now interns with the RBA. Sometimes you have to take the path less travelled to find the right way for your career journey. 🙌🏾👨🏽‍💻👣

Yesterday was our Melbourne Program Day!
We built rockets, completed escape room challenges and created goals to set up the next 12 months to be a success.
A huge thank you to everyone that came along, Origin Energy for hosting us and to Nous, Human Synergistics, IAG and our alumni for taking us through the workshops and creating an engaging and energetic atmosphere.
... We also had the privilege of listening to Aunty Joy Murphy, Elder of the Wurundjeri people, share her story in celebration of 2018 NAIDOC Week theme "Because of Her, We Can", and leave us with a powerful message of "You must stand strong. You must be strong. Or those who follow, won’t”.
Check out a few snaps from the day 📸 tag your friends!
