City Resort Hostel

Good place if you like cockroaches and crackheads. Avoid

I have stayed at several hostels across NSW and Victoria over the past few months and this is by far the best one i have been lucky to find. The manager is very kind and always smiling. The reception and staff are very helpful. The people are all really nice and friendly. The kitchen is clean and full of cutlery. I love the free coffee in the morning.The rooms are always clean (as well as having a fridge/freezer which most hostels don't provide). So far this is the best hostel i have been at. I wish I could give this place zero stars. Do not be fooled by the name. We booked a specific room at this hostel, one that supposedly had its own bathroom. When we arrived, they had given our room to someone else. They then gave us a key to a new room which, upon unlocking the door, already had someone in it too. They were very disorganized. They finally found a room for us, which did not have its own bathroom (there was one across the hall, which was extremely dirty and had a gaping hole in the window that looked like someone threw a rock through it.) It was winter when we visited, getting down to probably 40 degrees Fahrenheit (approx. 4 degrees Celsius), and they provided nothing but sheets. Maybe this is the norm for hostels, but that's pretty sad for the winter months. No heat or anything. After wearing our coats and shivering through the night anyway, and getting little to no sleep, we couldn't stand to stay another night. It was very run-down and dirty. We did not feel safe even walking on the floor of our room without shoes on.
Not a good place for kids; scary people were staying there and the place smelled like mold and smoke.
We tried to get a refund; they did not comply. We finally came to a (very disappointing) agreement and they still did not give us as much money back as they agreed to. It took multiple calls to them every day for about a week to get the money.
Overall awful experience. Our stay was back in June and I am still repulsively thinking about it.

September 2016 The hostel has had a change of owners and the new manager has put a lot of work into making the rooms and the rest of the hostel nice and clean. New paint and linen and the rooftop is awesome. Really nice manager too

Best to avoid. No ventilation. Facilities are below standard
