LOCAL BLOKE BLOG Westerlies, flat seas and clear water!
With the arrival of westerly winds, the oceans around local shores have flattened, suspended sand has dropped out and water clarity has increased. This all means that the fish are now more wary and so will either be found in deeper water (often beyond casting range) or nearer shore but only after dark. Having worked out the local beaches on our mid-week sessions we were expecting slow fishing and we weren’t disappointed.... Even the magical chromies failed to entice the fish on this occasion. Now, I love punching a lead half way to the horizon with a multiplier (overhead) casting reel. I dislike dealing with the results when I get my timing wrong. The satisfaction of mastering such a reel quickly evaporates when fish pass by and I’m still unpicking a birds nest. But, get the timing right and there is nothing as satisfying as watching the lead fly out to sea and gently break the surface of the water over 100m out as the spool hums at close to 60,000 rpm. It wasn’t until dusk that there was the first sign of action – a soft tremble of the rod on a squid/whitebait cocktail 100m from shore, followed by a slow bend. Grabbing the rod I could feel the weight of a sluggish fish reluctantly being coaxed to shore. Next minute disaster as my main line parted. Truth be told, I’d cut corners in my preparation this week. I had a horrendous birds nest on Sunday whilst fishing Steamers and rather than replace the line I unpicked it and thought “she’ll be right”. Wrong! The birds nest (or the unpicking of) had weakened the main line and now my one fish of the Wednesday session was escaping into the big blue. Having recently written of the difference the incremental one percenter approach delivers, I think I need to go back and take my own advice!

I visited most of the shops in the area looking for quality game fishing rigs. These guys seem to have the largest selection in the Nowra area.
Lures and all the equipment to rig yourself.
One of the few places where you can get stuff normal tackle shops just dont have in stock.
Great friendly team.
