Recycling plastic made easier!
Dutch high tech recycling company TUSTI developed an innovative technology for cleaning greasy plastic. The new method does not involve high temperatures or harsh chemicals, like common plastic treatments. Instead, plastic is shredded into small pieces which are then washed with a special cleaner, dried and packed into bags, making it ready to be dispatched to a plastic recycling facility.
TUSTI is a collaboration between Stiphout Industries a...nd Eindhoven University of Technology - an alliance of entrepreneurship and research. The company specialises in recycling issues and in treating difficult waste streams. For the cleaning of oily plastics, TUSTI plans to build a new facility with a recycling capacity of 10,000 tons per year!
In addition to the new facility plan, TUSTI is working on turning the cleaning of the greasy plastic into a closed loop process by re-using the cleaning agent. "One of our solvents can be separated from the oil of the plastic, which is why we are working on the technology enabling us to do so – and we are close to getting there!” #Innovation #Dutch #plasticwaste

After a successful launch of the Startup in Residence programme in 2015, StartupAmsterdam is now expanding its reach to the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
The Startup in Residence programme joins forces with nine municipalities to connect startups, scale-ups, innovative small and medium-sized businesses as well as social enterprises with key social and urban challenges. A collaboration with the municipalities of Haarlem, Haarlemmermeer, Velsen, Diemen, Lelystad, Almere, Purmere...nd, Zaanstad, and Amsterdam, the programme aims to solve seven defined social and urban challenges in the Amsterdam area.
The programme invites both Dutch and International entrepreneurs to find creative and viable solutions to these challenges. If the solutions prove successful, the municipality will invest in the startup or become its launching customer.
There will be an information session on 20 September for all startups and scale-ups who are interested in taking part in the programme. The meeting gives potential participants the opportunity to ask questions about the challenges, incubator programme and registration process. Applications are open from 14 August to 14 October 2018. #TheNetherlands #Amsterdam #urbanchallenge #startup

Dutch tech start-up Nico.lab is coming to Australia!
Nico.lab is the result of a collaboration between Amsterdam UMC and health tech venture builder NLC. The company has developed a software product, StrokeViewer®, which allows for a quicker diagnosis and treatment of strokes. Where making well-informed decisions in the appropriate treatment for strokes could take hours under current methods, StrokeViewer® decreases this amount of time to only a few minutes by using Artifici...al Intelligence (AI)-supported neuroimaging assessment.
The technology recently won a European prize of half a million euros, and the company has been asked to participate in clinical trials in North America and Australia. Moreover, it plans to operate in five Australian hospitals next year. To meet the growing demands, Nico.lab is looking for new investments on the Australian stock exchange. #Artificialintelligence #TheNetherlands #Australia #Healthtechnology

Amsterdam is introducing a new smart mobility initiative!
This autumn, the City of Amsterdam is launching a new scheme which aims to convince car owners to leave their vehicle at home and use public transport or sharing services instead. A hundred car owners will be asked not to use their cars for at least 2 months, and the City of Amsterdam will instead give them free travel credits that they can use towards alternative methods of transportation.
The innovative project is ...another measure that the Dutch capital is taking to promote smart mobility, making Amsterdam more accessible, and increase the use of green transport methods. Besides easing congestion in the city, the scheme allows the City of Amsterdam to gain insights into the effectiveness of using alternative modes of transport. The municipality is hoping the findings will help make these methods more efficient and consequently more attractive to people who would normally use their cars.
Residents who want to participate in the test can register from Monday 3 September 2018 on the City of Amsterdam’s website. To qualify for the trial, residents must hand in their parking permit for at least two months, and in return will receive 500 travel credits worth €500. #Greentransport #Smartmobility #Dutch

Australia is the world's second best-performing digital government!
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) collated data on 193 countries’ online services, digital infrastructure and citizens’ wellbeing to determine their score on the E-Government Development Index (EGDI). The index measures governments’ ability to deliver public services digitally. The key to a successful strategy is described as coordination across the entirety of the public ser...vice, a strategic vision and well implemented strategy, which allows governments to provide a digital public sector.
Australia's second place in this ranking means that it sets a good example for the Netherlands, especially with the Netherlands having ambitious plans to be Europe's digital leader with its newly implemented digital strategy that has been in effect since this summer. #Australia #Digitalisation #digitalinfrastructure

The city of Parramatta, described as Sydney’s tiger economy, has launched a state-of-the-art flood warning system called FloodSmart Parramatta. The system is powered by Dutch Royal HaskoningDHV's Flash® tool and developed together with water management consultancy and IT company Nelen & Schuurmans. Parramatta has introduced the FloodSmart tool to create a connected, resilient community and protect businesses by minimising the impact of flooding.
Royal HaskoningDHV's Flash® F...lood Service uses real-time and forecast weather data to predict flooding and provide early warnings to government, local residents and businesses directly to their computers, tablets or smartphones. After signing up for alerts via the city council's website, information will be received about the potential impact of flood to property and how to prepare for and potentially avoid major impact from flooding on the City’s FloodSmart webpages. The system facilitates this preparation in particular due to its high level of accuracy. #Dutch #watermanagement #Australia

Dutch Cycling Ambassador Mark Wagenbuur in Sydney
Earlier this week, we were honoured to welcome Dutch cycling ambassador Mark Wagenbuur in Sydney! For a sold out audience in Customs House, he presented his “Cycling in Sydney: Can we go Dutch?” story that proved to be very insightful on Dutch transport innovation throughout the years.
... Mark explained the historic events that influenced urban design in the Netherlands. Unlike many people (even most Dutchies!) think, there was a time in the Netherlands when cars took over from bikes and the accident rates of cyclists skyrocketed. This is when people started protesting, which eventually led to change: separate lanes for slow and fast traffic, (car)free city routes for cyclists, cycling exams for school children and the implementation of cycling grids so you can get from A to B by bicycle.
There have been many experiments with cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands, eventually leading to what the country is known for now: bicycles! (and windmills…)
Mark is positive on the future of cycling in Australia, and we look forward to seeing Australian cities go Dutch. #Dutch #Infrastructure #Transport #Australia

Quite often the passport photos we see don’t meet to the Dutch requirements and are therefore unusable for a Dutch passport application. To avoid any disappointments or delays with your application, we advise to have your photo’s taken at the photographers in Bondi Junction, mentioned on our website. They are familiar with the criteria.
Passport pictures used for Australian passports are usually too big to use for the application for a Dutch passport. You can check the requirements here: https://www.netherlandsworldwide.nl/…/p hoto-for-a…/australia

Earlier this month The Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, Minister for the Environment and Energy, visited the new state-of-the-art composting facility in Dandenong South, Melbourne. The facility is able to process and compost 12,000 truckloads of waste per year, making it the most advanced of its type in Victoria.
Waste Treatment Technologies (WTT), with its head offices in Oldenzaal, the Netherlands, was contracted in 2017 by SACYR to engineer, construct and commission the facility. ...The plant is designed to process a mixture of Food and Garden Organics (Green + FoGo). This means that food and green waste that currently ends up in landfill will instead produce high-grade compost for our gardens and parks. This part makes up an estimated 42% of landfill from Australia’s municipal, commercial and industrial waste. With this new facility, that waste is now turned into a new product. #wastemanagement #WTT #Australia #CircularEconomy

Former Infrastructure Australia chief executive Philip Davies will push governments to release data on how transport, energy and water services provided to consumers performs after joining the UOW: University of Wollongong, Australia 's SMART infrastructure group as chairman. SMART specialises in applied infrastructure research, and can analyse data from the government in order to give them confidence that providing data can have positive outcomes.
Data shared about for exa...mple the reliability of infrastructure services can make infrastructure much more efficient by helping to make smarter choices. A great example of this is seen in the initiatives of the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions - AMS InstituteThe AMS institution uses city data from Amsterdam to develop and valorise interdisciplinary metropolitan solutions, such as the crowd management initiative in 2015 at the SAIL event in Amsterdam where pedestrian flows were monitored.
AMS centers on urban themes such as water, energy, waste, food, data and mobility, and integrates these to develop a deep understanding of smart cities with Amsterdam as its test bed. #smartcities #Infrastructuredata #Australia #theNetherlands

Opened in February 2018, the Sydney Startup Hub is an ambitious initiative by the NSW Government to support innovation and strengthen the startup community in and around Sydney. Located above Wynyard station, the Hub does not only consist of (470!) startups, but also departments of companies such as Microsoft and Caltex that are seeking innovative ideas and/or concepts. Moreover, through a Regional Landing Pad, innovators in regional NSW are supported by providing a platform ...to improve the connection between Sydney and the regional startup community.
These companies, incubators and organisations such as Tankstream Labs form a vibrant hub that creates opportunities for scale ups to expand internationally. The Hub is therefore open to international startups for partnerships which is great news with the Netherlands being home to various similar initiatives such as YESDelft and Eindhoven Startups Foundation.
With a market ready to be further tapped into, Australia makes an interesting addition for startups looking for international opportunities! #innovation #Sydneystartuphub #startup #theNetherlands
