Darriwell Merino And Poll Merino Studs

Darriwell Merinos are a stable new type, developed to be a dual purpose merino which produce balanced, all round productive and profitable Merinos.

Darriwell Merino Stud was established in 1927 by Mr E. J "Ted" Little at "Darriwell" Trundle. The stud foundation was a peppin type, medium wool merino based predominately on Riverina and Macquarie stock.

Mr Little's main focus was a paddock reared animal that cut great volumes of wool on medium frames.

The Jones family purchased the adjoining "Darriwell" property and stud sheep in 1977. Since the purchase of Darriwell we identified the productivity of the Wonga type and continued with this peppin strain. As the wool industry became more precise, Mandalay genetics were added to fine tune the flock.

Some fifteen years ago the stud was closed for 10 years to develop the type of merino we have today, productive and profitable, balanced allround merinos.

Over the past 20 years Darriwell has been more active in the show ring, to obtain a real comparison of its top sires to industry leading sires. We are firm believers "an eye full is better than an ear full! "

With the increased demand for poll merinos, Darriwell has established a stud flock which currently has a base of 600 pure poll ewes. The poll flock will be bred along similar direction to the horn stud with the same balanced to breed an adapted with a slightly finer adult flock base.

The Darriwell sheep are currently in the most profitable wool type with the 19-20 micron wool consistently above average prices while still allowing for high cuts and maximum frame production. The type has a strong correlation to profitability in the history of merino production.
