Das Platforms Description

What we do

Das Platforms is a multi-format arts media project. It was founded in Sydney in 2008 and now works between Europe and Australia. In addition to print publishing, we present a program of video interviews and occasional online articles and reviews.

In 2015

From a new home in Europe, Das Platforms embarks on the next chapter. With the current momentum of our online and print publishing, we believe there is an opportunity to be not just an Australian operation that distributes overseas but one that integrates Australian content and Australian audiences into a broader set of cultural conversations. Not only is there the opportunity but there is a requirement at this time for Australian art - its artists, curators, collectors and audiences - as much as the art from any other region, to exist in both a local and international context. We are certainly not alone in thinking this but we feel that our unique take on art media, our history of formal innovation, and our interest in all aspects of the art ecology make for a valuable contribution to the art media landscape.

We are scaling-up our current model of video production – presenting a program of individual artist and curator interviews from state and commercial galleries, artist-run- initiatives, and kunsthalle /non-profit exhibition spaces around the world, alongside suites of co-produced videos developed with partnering organisations.

We are launching a new magazine called Oberon. Primarily a subscription magazine, there will be additional stockists at selected galleries and specialist bookstores. Oberon is printed because it knows what it means to be printed; it needs to be held, to be folded and passed on; it’s designed to be kept, to be treasured and to be turned to over time. In your carry-on or on your coffee table, Oberon is your companion to the world of art.

History

Between 2008 and 2014, 33 issues of Das Superpaper were published. Das Superpaper was printed in Sydney and distributed nationally at major public institutions, private museums, commercial galleries, libraries, universities and cultural boutiques. Distribution was supplemented by a free national mail-subscription program.

In mid-2010 the printed magazine found itself in the company of a new online video platform, 'Das Cinema', and an online short-format critical writing platform 'Das 500'. Over the following months they would amalgamate to become Das Platforms. Das Platforms was one of the first arts media organisations in Australia to comprehensively incorporate video production, and now has an archive of over 160 videos profiling artists, curators and galleries from all aspects of the art ecology.
