Day Of The Roses Description

The day of the roses - 1977 Granville Train Disaster On January 1977, Locomotive 4620 left Mt Victoria in the Blue Mountains at 6. 09am heading towards the Sydney Terminal. As the Locomotive neared the Granville Terminal only 2km towards Sydney at 8. 12am the trains right hand wheel derailed, the driver applying the brakes instantly in an emergency application, however the train continued in its derailed state until it reached a set of facing points causing the train to derail completely and rolling onto its right hand side.

The first compartment had the roof ripped off by a damage catenary stanchion, however remained upright, the second compartment remained up-right and undamaged, the third and fourth compartments stopped under the bridge remaining upright. The Bold Street Bridge was supported by steel piers in the centre, in the trains violent derailed state demolished the piers.

However ten seconds later more tragedy was to happen, the 200 tone concrete bridge collapsed on top of the third and fourth compartments crushing passengers instantly, bringing down the cars that were crossing the bridge at this time. In result 83 men, women and children lost their lives and another 213 people sustained injuries.

For the next 48 hours until the last remaining person was removed from the train, men and women risked their own lives in assisting those trapped and injured these men and women are the unsung heroes of this disaster.
