Dixon Park Surf Life Saving Club Description

Club History

The was founded in 1932 as part of the Northern District Branch (now Hunter Branch) of Surf Life Saving NSW. For the first two seasons the Club had no premises, instead a hole of 2. 5m across was dug at the base of ‘The Cliff’ which served as a meeting point and a temporary place to keep gear.

During 1934, the Club erected its first shed, a former fire damaged shoe repair shop, about 4 metres square which was dismantled and transported by horse and dray from nearby Hamilton. The first bronze squad was examined in 1933 and by 1936 /37 the Club had 28 active members.

In the early 1950’s Dixon Park had established itself as one of the leading clubs in ski events with paddlers like Bill McKintosh and Frank Okulich. McIntosh won the Australian Single Ski Championship in 1950 and again in 1953. Okulich won in 1951 but unfortunately did not get a chance to defend his title. He was killed by a shark at neighbouring Merewether Beach while body surfing with friends.

During the 1960’s and 70’s Dixon Park was well-known for its Iron Man, craft and surf competitors – Robbie Wood, Pedter McKerras, Charlie James, Greg Price and Peter Couglin were just a few of its members to achieve success.

In the 1980’s the Club was successful in surfboat competition, winning the State Open Championship in 1989. In the 1990’s, with the advent of Masters Competition for Lifesavers over the age of 30 years, Dixon Park achieved success at State, National and World levels with outstanding individual and team performances from people like Bruce MacDonald and Marie Williams.

Dixon Park was one of the first clubs in NSW to apply and receive a liquor licence however, in 1988 the licensed club was declared bankrupt and the liquidators demanded that the Club sell everything including rescue equipment such as IRB’s and surf boats.

Today, the Club is now financially strong and participates fully and actively in the Surf Life Saving movement.

**Nippers Carnival Policy for 2018/19 Season**
If you're interested in entering your Nipper into HSLS carnivals this season please take the time to read the updated DPSLSC 2018/19 Junior Members Competition Policy which is now available on the website (Link also below).
Following the Nippers Committee meeting on Thursday night it was decided that an additional parent volunteer eligibility requirement be added to the policy. For Nippers aged U9 to U14 (U8's excluded) wishing t...o enter carnivals at least one parent/caregiver must volunteer in one of the following roles: * Carnival Official (Level 1 Official award) * Water Safety (Bronze Medallion award) * Age Manager / Assistant Age Manager (Age Manager award) * First Aid Officer (Advanced First Aid Award) * Junior Committee Member
This Parent Volunteer requirement has been added due to the significant increase in carnival competitors in recent seasons, but the club not having enough parents volunteering to cover the required ratios needed at carnivals which is 1 official and 1 water safety per 10 competitors. At this time, these duties are falling on just a few parents which is not equitable.
It is estimated that once parents are qualified they will only need to volunteer at one carnival per season.
The following courses are available for interested parents wishing to enter their Nippers into carnivals: *Bronze Medallion Course - Tuesday 11th Sept - 6:30pm @ Dixon Park SLSC *Carnival Official Course - Thursday 20th September - Hunter Branch SLS Office @ Tighes Hill starting at 6pm * Age Manager Course - Wednesday 26th Sept - 6:15pm @ Dixon Park SLSC
To support parents / caregivers the club will cover 100% of the Carnival Officials Course and 50% of the bronze medallion course.
To register for these courses please email me ASAP Nippers@dixonparkslsc.com.au

Hunter Branch will be conducting an officials Course on Thursday 20 September at Tighes Hill commencing at 6pm.
... It is important for us to have as many accredited officials as possible to ensure the smooth running of our carnivals and to enable clubs to share the role within their membership.
The course requires the completion of an online component and a face to face session. The face to face session is also for those who may have completed the online component but who have not finalised the course. The face to face session will last approx 1 ½ hours.

A reminder to all about the enxt Bronze Medallion Course.
The course will commence with an induction to take place upstairs in the Clubhouse at 6.30pm tomorrow night (Tuesday 28/8/18). . If you cannot attend on Tuesday night you can still be part of the course. Depending upon the numbers that attend and enrol we will likely commence the course proper in two weeks, that is, on or about the 11 September, 2018. If you commit to the course before that date by email you will be ...able to enrol. Even better if you can get there on Tuesday night.
The cost will be $230.00 including $80 Club Membership. If you are the a parent of a Nipper at Dixon Park speak to me about a Discount.
I am proposing to train the theory work on Tuesday evenings at around 6 or 6.30pm for about two hours and the wet sessions will likely be Sunday mornings at 8am at Dixon Park. In order to participate you will need to be able to attend the majority of sessions. Subject to conditions we would look to get into the water by a date in October and there is potential to do the assessment in December.
If you are still interested I hope to see you at the Club.
