... "Open Air" is visual music, a visual setting of the 2013 album "Open" by Australian cult band The Necks. It is also a form of creative earth imaging; it combines timelapse Landsat satellite imagery of Australia, with motion-controlled aerial photography of the paintings and processes of Australian painter Emma Walker. Together, these two vastly different forms of aerial earth imaging combine to produce a complex picture of a changing planet. JOIN US tomorrow — DLUX is in-conversation with artist Helen Pynor about her work created in collaboration with cell biologists at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics (CBG) in Dresden, Germany.
Pynor’s work, "The End is a Distant Memory", explores her ongoing fascination with the porosity between mind and body, and culture and biology.
As part of her residency at CBG, Pynor examined whether it was possible to cultivate fibroblast cells – living ce...lls – from chicken meat purchased off a supermarket shelf. She found that indeed it is possible.
Pynor says, “The installation forms part of an ongoing investigation into the ambiguity of the life-death boundary. The next stage of the project will explore human near-death experiences.”

EP. 3 'THE STARS' | AUGUST 7 2018, 7PM | 107 REDFERN with artists Michaela Gleave ASTRONOMER DR. Michael Fitzgerald & collaborators.
Episode #3 of ‘The Constellations’ series, explores 'A Galaxy of Suns' : a smart phone app that ‘plays’ the stars as they rise and set over 360˚ of the horizon – for any location on Earth. Operating on a galactic scale this project is a collaboration across contemporary art, music, astronomy and design. A Galaxy of Suns works with the native pot...entials of smart device technology to create a unique experience of the cosmos accessible to audiences wherever they find themselves in the world. https://www.agalaxyofsuns.net
Tracking the Earth’s motions through space, A Galaxy of Suns documents in real-time the audience’s precise position in relation to the stars, sonifying stellar data to create a sound and visual composition unique to their location in space and time. Using the GPS data automatically recorded by smart phones and operational without network access, the project works with parameters such as location on the horizon, brightness, size, age and chemical composition of stars, and translates them into sonic and aesthetic variables including rhythm, pitch, volume, panning, colour and light intensity.
Created by artist Michaela Gleave, Amanda Cole - Composer and programmer Warren Armstrong - A Galaxy of Suns connects audiences with the unseen motions of our galaxy, through the intimacy of an app, and the large scale spectacle of choral performance. This year, in partnership with FBi Radio, DLUX MediaArts is launching a new program of discourse on art practices that operate at the intersections of science and technology.
The Constellations will begin to map the field of experimental, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and new media arts enquiry in Sydney and beyond, and provide a platform for discussing the issues that are driving artists and their collaborators in the research and development of new work.
We look int...o artworks that take on non-human intelligences, robotics, screen culture, virtual reality, new digital platforms, health and medicine, data, community and storytelling, as well as speculations on the future possibilities of art.
The Constellations will be available to audiences as both a series of live events held at 107 Projects, Redfern and as podcasts.
