Hungry Humpbacks on the migration
Have you ever wondered if Whales eat on their migration after leaving the nutrient rich waters of the Antartic?
Well.. Traditonally we have always thought migrating Humpbacks barely consume a morsel on their journey. That school of thought is changing, by seemingly strange observations taking place- including things we have seen too, here in Jervis Bay...
... It involves pillchards! 😮
To read about it hit up our blog https://www.dolphinwatch.com.au/but-do-th ey-get-hungry-whal…

This incredible footage was captured 2 years ago as a large pod of Humpback whales were migrating south off the coast of Cape Town South Africa.
Worth the watch!

When out whale watching, we all know the signs to look for unusual splashes from breaching whales, and the famous blow from the whale taking a breath.
Whats also a helpful indication is a bird!!
The Albatross is by far one of the most interesting bird. With a wingspan of up to 3.5 meters, no one really understands why they travel with the Humpbacks. Some say maybe to help find food source.
... Have you encountered Albatross while out on board with us?
Can you identify the Albatross(es) in the photos below?

A question we commonly get asked is:
What is the difference between an 'Eco Whale Cruise' and a 'Whale Watch Cruise' ?
Both cruises are a fantastic way to experience Jervis Bay and all that Whale Watching is!

We were lucky enought to have a fabulous photographer onboard this week.
The talented Emma English Photography has yet again captured some fantastic very well timed photos. Isn't this incredible! Pt Perpendicucular doing its thing in the background. Check out her page to see more of her great work.
... If you would like to test your photography skills and get the shots for yourself (you know, just to see how they compare...) Jump on a Whale Watching Cruise while the whales are still heading north!
We had some great whales on todays afternoon sunset whales cruise "The BEST show of the season"- skipper Daz.
Whales were breaching, tail slapping and launching themselves all over the place.

We shared this podcast last year and it is just so good we couldn't not re share.
So many things to learn from such a wonderful man, who has dedicated so much of his life to studying and identifying individual whales.

- "On this day"-
One year ago to the day, we had this happen:
" HUMPBACK CALF ANNOUNCEMENT!... We have just had reports of 2 Adult Humpback Whale inside Jervis Bay off Callala Beach WITH A NEWBORN CALF!
Our Captain Tim, has seen many whales in his time but never has he seen one this tiny! He believes the Calf has been born in the bay during the last day or so.
Explorer is also reporting many breaching whales at the entrance to the Jervis Bay!
A day this extraordinary does not happen too often!"
We wonder how this sweet baby fared.. Hopefully we can meet again soon!

Very friendly and informative crew, boat was the slowest of the 3 leaving Huskisson so it took a long time to get out to the Bay entrance (built 1981), coffee/ tea was served at the beginning of the trip but would be better straight after leaving the Whales when people are cold from being outside in the wind checking out the whales. No food for sale even though boat is set up to have a little shop. Good toolet facilities, boat well maintained. Great scenery and how many whales you see is always up to chance. Dolphins swimming on the bow on the way back, beautiful and the closest I have ever been to them. Overall a very nice afternoon out.
