Hands up if you've tried meal planning for yourself or a friend after they've had a baby? I think it's a great idea to have a meal train to help a new mother eat nutritiously in those first precious weeks.

"Traditionally around the world postpartum refers to about 40 days 'lying in' after your baby is born... These cultures and many more emphasise warmth, purification, nourishing food and rest. Massage, heat treatments, oil treatments, special soups and ritualised bathing are commonly a part of these cultural postpartum practises too. Mothers are excused from housework and socialising during this time."

"Despite the pervasive idea that the most "natural" care for baby comes from mom and only mom, a look at other cultures and other species tells a different story.... There's no denying that mothers can and often do play a unique role for their children (and I don't just mean gestation). But if children thrive with multiple, committed carers, it's worth revising some common cultural tropes about motherhood and childrearing. For one thing, moms might feel less guilty taking time away from kids if they know that time is spent developing other nurturing and "natural" relationships."

"... many, many hours are spent breastfeeding, rocking, cuddling and holding your sleeping baby in your arms. It’s so much more enjoyable when you have a beautiful and comfortable space"

Slowly but surely, people are awakening to the importance of postpartum care. We are evolving in the way we support new families.

"Often mothers are trying to do everything correctly and will drop all their own needs to look after their children even to the point where they don’t prepare meals for themselves, get enough sleep or wash...
If you look at the ancient medicine of India—Ayurveda and the ancient medicine of China—Traditional Chinese Medicine, both are very aware that this can happen to mothers. There are beautiful descriptions of what happens to a mother if she’s not cared for, and they have practices set up to prevent it from happening."

Doula Wisdom Tip: Take some time to think about what you may like to eat after your baby is born. Planning for postpartum during pregnancy gives you time to stock up your pantry and freeze some nutrition meals. Keep it simple... things like stocks and soups are ideal for after the birth. Also check out meal planning sites like http://www.mealtrain.com/ so your friends and family can help.

It's important to eat wholesome foods after giving birth... This beautifully written book has some very nourishing recipes and ideas for recuperating during the postpartum time. I highly recommend it! If you hire me as your postpartum doula, I will gift you a copy ;-)

"Our society would be a different place if there was as much attention given to the post-birth transition as there is to the birth itself. I venture to say that fewer women would be depressed, more couples would survive the first year, and babies would be calmer." - Kimberley Ann Johnson from the The Fourth Trimester

"A new mother should be treated with massage, warm baths, a specific diet and herbal drinks that prevent infection, promote vitality and alleviate vata." - Charaka, father of Ayurveda

"A word about postpartum, and also everything else: If we want anything in life to improve- we have to change something.
We can’t go about doing our daily Selfless Hero Mom thing and expect postpartum to breeze by. It’s not that way, the baby season. It’s a solid kick in the backside. And we can't do what we did last postpartum and expect better- not gonna happen."

I imagine when people think of a #postpartumdoula they think this is what I do all day 😆 Actually it’s a very tiny part of my job. I spend time helping mothers feel deeply relaxed with warm oil massages, nourished with wholesome meals and nurtured with love and care. I certainly got some #oxytocinvibes holding onto this sweet cherub that @hammertijd grew 😍 🙏🏼 #mamahadtopee #newborncuddlesarethebest #doulawisdom #firstfortydays #fourthtrimester

Tip #3: Ask visitors to bring dinner: You may laugh at this….my husband did. But, whenever he asked someone to come another day, the visitor always replied, “Sure. What can I bring?” ... “Dinner would be great!”
Tip #5: Don’t play hostess: Don’t feel the need to cook or clean your house before someone comes over. Would they expect this if you had back surgery? No. So, sit down, snuggle that sweet little baby, and chat for as long as you want to.
