Dpr Breaking Description
Breaking in - Racehorses
We ensure the best education and the best of care for horses on our property. At DPR Breaking your Racehorse will experience:
Close ground work - Getting the horse used to the rider, the bridle and saddle.
Handling of the legs and feet- We make sure that your horse has plenty of work on their legs, so that the farrier can attend to them with ease.
Washing /Hosing - All horses will be hosed, scraped, then toweled after being worked.
Tying up - We teach all of our horses to stand tied up in a stable.
Barrier Education - All yearlings are educated in the barriers
Working under saddle - Your horse will be worked under saddle. Horses will be ridden in a round pen, around the property and on our 1000m racetrack in an exercise saddle /pad.
Working in company /upsides - We work all our horses upsides each other. Horses will also do a half pace for 400 meters on their last week, to ensure horses are relaxed at speed and prepared for the transition into training.
Breaking for Competition & Leisure
At DPR Breaking we educate for many disciplines such as Dressage, Show Jumping, Polo, Camp Drafting and other Western Disciplines and Horses for leisure, each different style will be given the relevant training during their stay (e. g. Polo horses will be trained with a mallet and play 'stick and ball') Time required for breaking in is usually 6 weeks, depending on the horse. In the unlikely event that a Horse requires more time than this, the remainder of their stay will be at no additional cost
During this time your horse will be educated in the following areas:
•Lead & Lunge
•Walk, Trot and Canter under saddle on the correct leads
•Riding in the round yard, open paddocks and trails
•Responding to Rein and Leg cues
•Controlling the movement of your horses head and neck, hips, shoulders and ribs under saddle
•Desensitizing - By using sound, touch and sight (i. e. Plastic Bags, Saddle Cloths)
•Close groundwork
•Education on the Bridle - Moving your horse forward, backwards and sideways.
•Washing & Hosing - All horses will be Hosed after working
•Leg /Feet Handling - Horses will be regularly handled on their legs and feet so that they can be tended to by a Farrier easily
Early bookings are advised.
