. In 1980, the American Equitable Life Assurance Society purchased the site and the existing buildings were demolished. Renowned American architect, Edward Raht, was recruited to design The Equitable Building and stone masonry firm, Hudson and Loveridge, carried out the building. Raht has been acknowledged for introducing the Federation Romanesque style to Australia. The building is one of the earliest Australian buildings to demonstrate this style and one of the first to be constructed with external walls built entirely in trachyte. The full height atrium is a breathtaking feature of the building with its dazzling stained glass ceiling and marble lined walls complete with decorative bronze work.
