7 News Sydney and 9 News Sydney just wondering if anyone would like to check how it came about that I was close enough to the whales to get the footage you have since used as an example of doing something illegal? Is it illegal to say something is illegal without checking how it came about? Also wanted to clear up the perception that this footage is the mother and calf that rested near the surf club for a couple of days. This is definately NOT the mother and newborn. Check t...he size of the baby on the cool drone footage. These vids are of 2 other whales that approached me in the bay on the same day. Research suggests the whole population of Southern Rights that visit our coast is around 300, we had 1.3% of the population in Tathra that day!! Anywho, it's not illegal if you are 100m away (300m if it's mother and calf) and the whales then come to you. Should I have then moved away? I always take the camera so filmed the approach and subsequent interaction. Easier said than done sometimes. I was petrified and dropped to my knees drifting on a stiff breeze out to sea. Whale kept circling around. I had to adjust with small paddle strokes to keep an eye on it so as to know what it might be doing. You don't get this close for this long unless the whale want's to be involved. Three/Four tail beats and they are 200m away. Once it was say 150m away on the seaward side(safe from me falling on it) I thought I would get back up to head in. It chased me!! Check how interested it is in the funny little thing floating above it. If you get a chance play it on a big screen as it eyeball's the camera, it really does look pretty chilled, not harrased as some have suggested. These guys charge boats if they are ticked, my feel at the time was zero agression on the whales part. We are so lucky to have these awesome creatures passing us by, near or far any time you spot them it's exciting. I hope to be out with them again soon, with a bit of luck 100m away, waiting to see how they feel about coming for a closer look. PS 7 News Sydney is it illegal to paddle near the sharks?
