After a extended period off the water , and with water temps dropping way down , the thoughts turn to fishing the washes amongst other things. As a kid , I always loved catching Blackfish , so I was very happy when old regular Aleco and his mate Henry rang looking for a Blackfish trip. Due to the swell with the last few storms , I knew finding good cabbage weed would be difficult , so a quick call to my old mate Alex Bellissimo had him take me to one of his tricky "private bin" locales where some could be sourced when the swell was up. Runout tide and low wind made for a top set up and they were thick , double hookups regularly and some good size ones amongst them ..... I deadset forgot how much fun these are ! .... roll on winter :)

I did a trip today with Dave , Isador , Jimmy and Vilva form South Africa ... they'd never caught Dollies before and were keen to see what it was all about. Water temps were great at low 24's , and they were on the job again , as they have been pretty much all season .... a stack of fish between small to a metre again , the larger fish kept Jimmy tied up for a bit on the light spin gear. They kept 5 for dinner and released the rest. Hoping this water hangs around for a bit more even !! 😁

With the warm water still around , the Dollies are still going strong. I went today with James , James , Alex and Dave who hadn't caught Dollies before and were keen to check them out. The Easter crowds were out in force so an early start proved wise. Numbers of fish between small up to 1 metre , the boys had a ball on the light spin gear again and caught a stack , kept seven and released the rest including one of the biggest. Hoping the warm water hangs around a bit longer !

Just when you thought they couldn't get any stupider ... First up here is my original response to Craig McGill after this was posted on his page Fishabout Sydney Harbour

Had a trip yesterday with Mats and his young bloke Col who were looking for his first Dolly ... well he nailed it alright .. I thought I'd start him off on some smaller fish on the light gear , and , as usual in fishing ... the fish had other ideas. First bait in the water on one of the light squidding outfits , 5kg braid and a 10kg Flouro leader , and it just takes off ! ... I'm watching the 10m colour changes go out .. 1.. 2 .. 3 .. 4 .. 5 ... hmmm ....... the young bloke did well , stayed calm and got after it. 45 mins later we get colour on a nice fish and he decked his first Dolly , a long lean fish around the 130 mark ... a top effort by the young fella !! ... he had to have a bit of a lie down after :)

If you're after a tasty feed , the Dollies are around in good numbers right now .... pretty much everywhere !

Little Ana from the preceding post with her first Kingfish , 6 years old on 6lb line :)

Just a short 4 hour Kid's trip today in the Harbour with young Alex and his two little sisters Ana and Elle , 6 and 11 and their dad Eugene. It was Elle's birthday and she started with the first few fish ! , some nice Tailor around the 45cm mark. We finished with a mixed bag of Bonito , Tailor and Kings , little Ana landed her first little King , 6 years old on 6lb line , nice work ! Young Alex also landed his first King , a respectable mid 70's fish on PE 1.5 gear.

Went today with Stefan who brought his mate Neil along to celebrate his birthday. Neil had never been fishing before , this was his very first fish ... I'm a tad jealous .. I think my first fish was a mullet or something .. Nice work Neil !!

A shot in the harbour today after the recent bout of ordinary weather with Grant and Kate. The harbour still holding good water temperature as opposed to outside at the moment , and still holding a few reasonable Kings.

After doing mostly wash fishing and harbour charters recently , it was great to get out for a shot for Reds with my mate Anthony Ball. We started in about 20 metres with not much current , and moved out to about 40 metres with a little more south drift. A few small fish , then some better one's turned up , smashing the plastics hard. Anth got the best one on one of the new Happy Rock Softies in the Curly tail .... awesome to be fishing the Reds again :) These fish from the Sydney metro area.

The Sydney harbour wash fishing still going nuts , out with Jason and Dave from the south side this time , plenty of nice sized Drummer on the chew smashing gear , only real problem is getting the baits past the hordes of Blackfish , Bream and Trevally. Drummer one of the best eating fish going round the Sydney area , I rate them only behind Snapper ... Jason even sent me through a shot of their BBQ afterwards ... he reckons he couldn't even get a shot while the tray was full 🤣

The Wash fishing in Sydney harbour still firing hard , as is usual at this time of year , a feed for dinner easily had with mininimal effort ! ... Quality Black Drummer and nice Groper to be had along with hordes of big Blackfish , Bream and Trevally. Easy fishing ! :)

A sizeable percentage of the problem when it comes to the issue of fighting the fanatical Green extremists with their one eyed obsession to lock out public areas from anyone who doesn't agree with them , is that making your views heard to the person who is in the position to do something about has always been difficult ... sometimes actually made that way by the Green lobbyists to enforce their agenda ! ... so here is a simple one for those who really want to protect their way of life. Just go to this petition , click on the link at the bottom right hand side , and send this on with a short note in the space provided to your local member ... easy ! ... and take back your rights from those hell bent on taking them from you ... everyone has a right to enjoy their pastime.

User

Plenty of Kings around at the moment , we released 20 + fish on one trip on the weekend , no horses but some nice average size fish.

User

So you think there will be no fishing restrictions in Sydney Harbour ?? .... well here is what is ALREADY in place .... 60.72 % ... and they're after more ... make no mistake , action must be taken NOW before it becomes too late.

User

The washes are on fire at the moment , I did a trip yesterday with good client Mr. Xue and his friend Tim on their new Grady White loaded to the gills with everything including the latest model Minn Kota self deploy , priceless for fishing the washes. We found everything from Blackfish , Trevally , Silver Drummer , Blue Groper and numbers of solid Black Drummer all within a couple of hours , so dinner was sorted :) Winter fishing rocks !!

User

Been doing mostly wash fishing trips lately , and seeing the spike down in water temp , have been itching to do a Snapper trip. We went in some ordinary conditions yesterday and broke it up a bit with some plastics mixed in with the standard approach. We found plenty of pan sized fish in the 12 - 25 metre zone , and a couple of better fish appeared in the afternoon , though apart from one solid fish dropped on a plastic , we missed the donkeys today. Looking forward to start doing a few more Snapper shots !

User

I had the first wash fishing charter for the season on the weekend in some ordinary weather , Kimio and his young fella Ricky have just started fishing , doing a bit off Clifton Gardens wharf. They didn't want to fish all day and just wanted a short trip , but still after something that would bend a rod. The good old Black Drummer is a tough customer at the best of times , so into the washes we went , and amongst Bream , Trevally and so forth , we found them. Ricky did well in some ordinary conditions and it was good going for a young bloke with a fishing career spanning four weeks.
