Hey Foxes!! 🦊 We thought we’d do a little Friday history lesson!
Did you know that the word 'wardrobe' comes from the French garderobe, which in Medieval times meant 'toilet'! Garderobe literally means 'to guard one's robes', and it's thought that this phrase originates from hanging clothes in the toilet??!! – thankfully we’ve come a long way since then!
Before the creation of the wardrobe people kept their clothes in chests, it wasn’t until the 12th Century, wealthy nobles n...eeded a better space to store their fine gowns and other clothes. Back then the wardrobe was just a plain old room filled with cupboards! Did you know that the hanging rail was first created for a king's robe, this was to ensure his clothes didn’t become creased before the king would be dressed by his helpers!
The oak 'hanging cupboard' dates back to the 17th century. The built-in wardrobes back then were huge! So huge, they could hold eight small men in them! In the UK around the 19th century wardrobes evolved and became smaller. Sheraton and other fine cabinet makers created extravagant robes from mahogany and other woods that were hard to find or imported from different parts of the world.
Today in Australia we have wardrobes everywhere and they come in all shapes and sizes and hold a variety of our belongings! From clothing, to linen, to storage for the kid’s toys! We all love and need more storage!
