Our aim is to facilitate and nurture collaborations between people with a mix of disciplines with a passion for culture and to build a more resilient and sustainable independent arts community for the future.

Frontyard is open for events and by appointment, or every second Thursday from 4. 30 - 6. 30pm for a regular open house event.

Enjoy Public Art Gallery opened their August exhibition Purpose-Built this week with Dat Library, Louisa Afoa, Hyperreadings, Tim Larkin, Abe Hollingsworth and Frontyard's contribution of a 5 kg selection of books from our decommissioned library. This is an exchange collaboration and Enjoy will send us a selection of books in return. Looking forward to it! Drop in or stay for the day. All voices are welcome.
Frontyard and our library has been invited by Enjoy Public Art Gallery (Wellington, NZ) to be a part of their upcoming August exhibition. They were initially interested in having a curated selection of books from our library as part of the exhibition. The history of our library, built of rescued books from the Australia Council collection, is one that aligns with some of the current changes to libraries in Aotearoa (specifi...cally the announcement that the Elam Fine Arts Library would be closed).
We thought that this presents a great opportunity to support Enjoy in bringing attention to the increasing hostility towards libraries and public spaces generally. We proposed a simple process of exchange and entanglement. We will be sending Enjoy a selection of our library - precisely as much as equates to a shipping cost of $75 - which will become a custodial collection within their own small library. In return they will reciprocate - sending us a new selection of books for our collection. Enjoy and Frontyard will care for each otherŌĆÖs books.
This is a call out to everyone who has a working relationship with our collection or library interested people (past and future) to come together and select books, as well as to collectively write an accompanying Letter of Agreement between Frontyard and Enjoy.
In response Enjoy will host an event/afternoon tea during the exhibition to decide on what to send in return (equivalent to the freed-up shelf space created by the publications we send). We are curious about what it means to circulate a non-lending collection with care. Does a collection need to be physically located to retain integrity?
Labour involved: Book selection, accompanied by discussion reflecting on the selection decision Writing the Letter Getting and packing the box
Things we need: a box, scale, and some tape.
This day in the library will be followed by a communal dinner to celebrate our artist fee and declare our selection.
Tea, coffee and snacks will be provided during the day.

What to bring If you'd like to work on our digital documentation or tools, it would be best to bring a laptop. Cataloguing the library requires a laptop, smart phone or tablet.
There's plenty of weeding to do in the garden too, so you can just bring your hands if that suits.
Rough Plan 10am : Collect all the activities that need doing / that people would like to do today. 10:15am : Divide into groups for the different activities. 1pm : lunch break 3:30pm : Celebrate our achievements and then clean up

We are planning on doing a small trial run at *Frontyard* this Saturday (the 2nd of June) and would love to invite you to join us. This is both to share this project that we have been working on slowly and silently with you, our friends and local community, but also to help us iron out the presentation before headi...ng off to Moscow next week.
For more context on HyperReadings - here is a super long essay that Sean Dockray and Benjamin wrote recently - https://sdockray.github.io/hyperreadings/
