Year 12 student and co-chair of the SRC, Mitch Wood, took time out from a busy schedule this week to spend time at Wynyard train station raising money for veterans and their families during Legacy Week. Mitch is a corporal in The Australian Air Force Cadets and wanted to help raise awareness and funds for the families of our incapacitated and deceased veterans. #glenaeon #steiner #waldorf #acompleteeducation #legacyweek

On Saturday 1 September, 14 students competed in the 2018 Sunsprint Solar vehicle competition held at UNSW. The event requires students to work together to build a working car and/or boat model that is only powered by solar energy. The vehicles needed to meet specific criteria (information and details on the event website www.sunsprint.com.au). Cars were raced over a 20m straight track and the “seafaring” vessels needed to travel across a 10m straight pool. Cars and boats rac...ed in pairs alongside each other in an elimination style tournament, which saw two vehicles compete in the “Final race off” for the day.
Several groups began working on their projects earlier in Term 3 and the level of immersion that all six teams showed during the week leading up to the day was outstanding. The opportunities for the acquisition of problem solving skills were abundant, allowing students to learn a plethora of valuable abilities from the experience. To see the students working outside of their teams, helping each other to make final adjustments to the vehicles was very heart warming.
Everyone who competed on the day showed great enthusiasm and enjoyment regardless of their final placing amongst the other schools. Congratulations to all students involved in the event, even if they were unavailable on the day. One boat and one car placed in the top 5 for the state. Elke (Year 7) raced the “Pink Squid” to attain a final placing of 4th in the High School division. Year 8 students Alexander, Oliver, Isaac and Jaydon Lowbuilt the “Shògun”, raced by Alexander and Oliver on the day, which also achieved a final placing of 4th in the 10m boat High School division. The “Pink Squid” and the “Shògun” teams have been invited to compete in the National competition in December, with more details to come.
Thank you to Deborah Lloyd who provided support leading up to the event, assisted on the day and also arranged the ordering of the boat and car kits. The team is also very grateful for the guidance from parents and guardians leading up to the event. Students who are interested in competing in the 2019 Sunsprint competition can see their Science teacher for further information.

Year 7 Pythagoras Main Lesson
Elena Rowan has been teaching her Year 7 class about Pythagoras and his various theorems, and through this they have been learning about the origins of mathematical thought. Part of this main lesson involved putting into practice the work of Thales, who worked on calculating the size and length of the pyramids using smaller triangles and calculating their size using, among other things, their shadows. This week, the children tried the same calculations using their own shadows and a stick. And during morning circle, to fire up the neurons, they tied themselves in a knot and had to work out how to undo themselves!

Introduction to wool for Class One This week, the children at Castlecrag received a visit from Golden Ridge. They come as a way of introducing class one to wool before they learn to wash, card and spin wool before learning to knit. While the animals were visiting the other classes, including all three kindergarten groups, playgroup also had the opportunity to pat and feed the lambs and alpaca. The lambs here are orphans, and raised at Golden Ridge and ranged from 4 to 8 weeks old. Such a wonderful experience, that even the grown-ups enjoyed. #glenaeon #steiner #waldorf #acompleteeducation #goldenridge #sheep #wool #alpacas
