Your place to hang between classes at UoN. New York Deli style food, great coffee, cold beer and delicious cocktails. Open Mon - Fri, 11am - 6pm.

Godfrey Tanner Bar Description

Godfrey Tanner is a most conspicuous character. From one perspective, having a bar named after you is a somewhat dubious honour. In Tanner's case, it's an indication of the extent to which he was happy to meet students on their own terms.

He was always involved in the student life of the university, and was extremely generous and supportive. Many remember him with great fondness, and suggest that Tanner was the exemplar of the university spirit in Newcastle.

Of course, that being the case, it's quite apt that we acknowledge that with a bar.

So if you are one of the people who have, like Godfrey Tanner, realised that university life isn't just about studying, the Godfrey Tanner Bar is a place for you.

Good food, great beer, and an excellent atmosphere. A foundation of UoN with a legacy that will rival ozymadius himself.

User

Not very flexible on food menu ... could be a little less aragent in food ordering

Great uni bar. A fantastic place to relax with friends with some good food. Comfy booths and wifi really complete the experience.

Used to be the last cool place on campus after bar on the hill fell to the profit first spirit second mentality that has been taking over UON lately. We can all agree that profit is important, but the GT bar was hardly struggling, it always had people in it and it always had a good line of people ready to buy foods every single day.

Now? Its empty and G.T management deserves to choke on its greed.

- Coffee is now as expensive as the rest of uni and tastes as bad (oxidised and burnt)

- food items are as expensive as they were but quantity and quality is down

- atmosphere has been completely destroyed

How was the atmosphere destroyed? I'd guess it was by the "you must have bought food or drink from here to sit here" mentality. Even if the place is empty. Even if i have no food or drink from anywhere and just sat too long without ordering. Jokes on them though, I used to come in, sit down, chill chat and buy beers/coffees as time passes to meet my needs once I felt comfortable, not anymore, and judging by how dead GT is now im not the only one who feels this way. Who wants to come in and hurl down a beers at 15 minutes a beer just to keep a seat? Not I.

the G.T. bar, once the last bastion to stand up to the mentality of higher profit margins at any cost approach which has sucked the life and soul out of UON.

I guess it has to be said that the G.T bar has always done what it does well, its a shame it has chosen to be terrible.

I only mourn to see Godfrey Tanners name tarnished so badly.

"Tanner was a key figure in the campaign for NUC's independence from the University of New South Wales.[1] According to University legend, Tanner officiated at a celebratory bonfire for the inaugural Autonomy Day, during which he poured goon libations onto the ground to "sanctify the land upon which the University rests"."

Does this sound like the legacy he would have wanted? I think not.
