🌱 🍊 We are building a permaculture garden just ten minutes from the cafe to grow the freshest of organic produce for our kitchen to ensure our customers get great quality meals. Here is a little insight into how the orchard is being built...
... ‘Although we've had a little rain lately, the current drought is a reminder that when setting up orchards & gardens, water harvesting, water storage & water use, must be top priority!
So as part of the overall permaculture design at ‘From Our Farm’, we have integrated a ‘Swaled Orchard’ to make the most out of the rainfall we do receive.
A swale is a water harvesting channel on contour that captures surface water & silt, allowing rainwater to sink under the orchard growing mound, providing prolonged underground moisture for the fruit & nut trees growing above.
To increase the success of the orchard, we will also use the ‘Plant Guild’ permaculture system to integrate combinations of various plants that complement the orchard by protecting the fruit trees, covering & building soil, slowing evaporation, providing beneficial insect habitat, accumulating minerals & nutrients & providing additional food crops.
This system mimics natural forest layers and minimises maintenance in the mid to long term.’
