NEW MOBILE PHONE DETECTION DEVICES
As of 1 July 2018 new cameras will be used to detect mobile use across New South Wales roads.
Statistics from the New South Wales Centre for Road Safety showed that from 2010 to 2014 there were 236 crashes where hand-held mobile phone use by drivers was identified as a contributing factor. This included seven fatal crashes and 116 injury crashes.
... Under the Road Transport Legislation Amendment (Road Safety) Bill 2018 this new technology will take images of motor vehicles at random and if the driver is detected using their mobile phone illegally the penalties will be severe.
For 1st offences the penalty is $337 and 4 demerit points. For Learner and P1 License Holders this will also mean a 3 month license suspension.
