Spanning three exciting days from 25 – 27 September 2015, art4refugees is an annual charity art exhibition that raises funds for SCARF (Strategic Community Assistance to Refugee Families) – a volunteer-based community organisation supporting refugees starting a new life in the Illawarra. It is a unique event, where artists donate their work and 100% of art sales directly support the work of SCARF. Nationally acclaimed artists such as Archibald Prize short-listed Paul Ryan, Auguste Blackman and Sallie Moffatt are among the hundreds of artists who have supported art4refugees in the past.

Want to know a bit about SCARF?

SCARF is an volunteer-based, non-profit organisation that supports and empowers people from refugee backgrounds to lead fulfilling lives in the Illawarra region. Our services include:

- homework help and tutoring for primary and high school age children
- home-based individual and family mentoring
- computer literacy classes
- L2P Mentor Driving Program
- recreation and training programs for youth including leadership & wellbeing camps
- work experience & sills-development opportunities; and
- social inclusion activities.

The community-based support offered by SCARF promotes enduring friendship, understanding and connection which can be life-changing for individuals and families from refugee backgrounds and for the wider community.

SCARF celebrates its 10th birthday this year– a decade of delivering programs and services to refugee families and communities in the Illawarra! Over the past 10 years, more than 1000 people from refugee backgrounds (including individuals and families from Afghanistan, Burma, Burundi, Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Syria and Togo) have accessed one or more of SCARF’s services. In addition, we have over 150 volunteers from the Illawarra region who generously share their time, energy and expertise to help deliver SCARF’s activities and programs. SCARF has never received ongoing government funding. We rely on small grants, volunteer resources and the true generosity of the Illawarra community and beyond, to continue our work.

With your support, we hope we can continue to provide our unique, responsive, wrap-around service to refugee families in the Illawarra, long into the future.
