Anna Gardiner’s design is simplicity itself with a stripped black platform and set of multi-use stairs, bare makeup table and overflowing costume rack. ... With text responsive lighting, look for the black and white of early television, and a splendidly designed audio mix, the production has the seamless finesse which allows uninhibited absorption in the music of Evie’s struggle to recover from the past to a wholeness of being and self-acceptance."

"Within a no frills set up, the cast prove themselves more than proficient, at a lot of heavy lifting. The ingenue version of Evie, is played by bona fide triple-threat Loren Hunter, whose powerful acting and mesmerising dulcet tones, has us hopelessly engrossed in her character’s captivating melodrama. Amanda Harrison brings star quality to Evie at her early retirement age, a confident presence, thoroughly reliable as the production’s heart and soul, on which all the action anchors. Love interest June is played by a very delightful Bishanyia Vincent, effervescent as flamboyant showgirl and deeply poignant as the one who got away. Vincent is equally persuasive in the role of Margaret, Evie’s sister, a difficult personality made worthy of compassion by the actor’s detailed rendering."

"The music is very effective, Steven Kreamer (who also did the orchestrations and arrangements) leading a band in fine form. Highlights include the music-box accompaniment to And it Turns (as television swallows the variety shows) and the brassy accompaniment to numbers like Bindy do the Lindy and Life of a Woman.
All in all, there is a lot to love in this musical, which shines a light on the stories often obscured in Australia’s history."
