Holbrook is a great convenient overnight stopping place for motorists travelling the Hume Freeway looking for accommodation halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, plus Canberra and Melbourne, as well as for people making even longer journeys. Holbrook is also within a short distance to many local towns such as Albury and Wodonga, Wagga, Gundagai , Culcairn, Henty , Jingellic, Woomargama and Tarcutta and with 6 motels in Holbrook there are a large number of rooms on offer. Besides being a nice, small country town, Holbrook has been enhanced by the diversion of the Hume highway with the opening of the Hume Freeway bypassing the town centre, which has managed to divert a great deal of highway traffic, which did not need to stop in the town, from the main street. This has made staying in Holbrook a much more pleasurable experience with nearly all the interstate transport trucks plus lots of cars not needing to travel our main street, as occurred before the bypass was constructed. Most traffic is now cars of local inhabitants plus lots of tourists as well, and without the constant heavy through traffic once experienced, tourists are finding stopping in town for a break, or saying overnight, a pleasant experience. It is now so easy to park and explore our local shops, plus explore some of our attractions such as our full size HMAS Otway submarine memorial display, and our 1 /5th scale model of Commander Holbrook's B11 submarine and Greater Hume which is in the park opposite Holbrook Skye Motel. There is also the Wool Pack Inn museum worth a visit with Grimwood's Store, plus the National Museum of Australian Pottery opposite. We have specialist shops catering to tourists such as Collectables, Craft and Embroidery, Gift and Clothing, Old Wares, Antiques, Chemist, Newsagency, Supermarkets, Hardware plus Service Stations as well as a number of food outlets which are very popular such as Holbrook Bakery with two separate locations. The Hotel Holbrook, Riverina Hotel and Holbrook Returned Services Club offer services including good meals, which supplement meals available from other outlets such as Holbrook Chinese Restaurant Eat-in and Takeaway, Holbrook Pizza and Pasta Takeaway, Ginger and Olive Indian Italian Restaurant & Takeaway, J and B's Gourmet Cafe, The Submarine Café , and Caltex Roadhouse Truck Stop, all renowned for tasty food.
Holbrook Air Park is just outside of town which has developed into a major ultralight aircraft establishment and home to Holbrook Ultralight Club who make visitors very welcome.
Take the shortcut through Holbrook! Because the freeway loops around the town of Holbrook, it is actually shorter to travel through the town - about 800 metres less I have been told! Of course it is a slower option as our town area has a 50 km /h speed limit, but this makes a pleasant change from the hurley-burley of the Freeway.
