HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL ``I am working my way to become a surgeon so I am aiming to be on the surgical training program. I currently work as part of the surgical team, looking after inpatients and assiting with operations. I am responsible for surgical consults, so that could be anyone who comes into ED or into the hospital with a surgical issue, I need to review them in consultation with the surgeon. Every day is unpredictable. A lot of patients may only see me for one part o...f the day, either down in ED when I am consulting or in theatres, but there is always something to do. My job involves long hours …and there is a lot of problem solving. It’s a nice progression to be able to see patients from the beginning (of their journey) right through to the end post-operation. It’s always nice when patients come back to the clinic for follow up and you can see how well they have progressed. When I am not here at work, I like to spend time outdoors and with friends.’’ – Alex Stathis, Unaccredited Surgical registrar.

HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL `` The best part of our role as midwives is the opportunity to support women and their families through a truly life changing experience. We are privileged as midwives to be a part of the women’s experience of pregnancy, birth, and welcoming a new life into the world. Working within a maternity service, I am very lucky to be involved with families who are experiencing a very happy time within their lives. However, as midwives, we need to remember, at ti...mes, some families will have an experience which is unexpected and unplanned and as a midwife we play a pivotal role in supporting the mother, partner, and family through what can be a very challenging time. Luckily this is a small number of women, but it’s important to acknowledge the amazing role midwives play within these situations. Through supporting women and their partners through pregnancy, I am able to prepare them for not only birth, but for parenthood, which leads to long term benefits not only for the family unit but also the community as a whole.’’ Amanda Keating, Acting Clinical Midwifery Consultant.

HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL “I am a plumber by trade and spent 20 years working in the private sector before I came to Hornsby about five years ago. Plumbing here is very similar to working privately: plumbing is plumbing, but you do need a different skill-set to work in a hospital because you have to be able to work with patients and clinical staff. My day can be very interesting and really diverse. I am not just a plumber but part of the engineering team. All of us help each ot...her so if there is a problem with air-conditioning, electrical – any problem in the hospital and we help. My work, and that of the team, has a huge impact on patients because every day they turn their taps on or flush their toilets and they are working. I am proud to say we haven’t had a hot water system break down and that is down to the diligence of the team.” Lucas Woodford – plumber

HUMANS OF THE HOSPITAL ``Our elderly are the (patients) most likely to fall in our care and those with a cognitive impairment are even more vulnerable. So much of what we do is around managing their risk of harm whilst they are in-patients. I am the Clinical Nurse Consultant for Acute Care of the Elderly in the hospital. I am involved in reviewing patients for rehabilitation or discharge with the geriatrician/rehab staff specialist, planning care for those patients who have d...elirium, advising on how to manage the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and planning and delivering education for nursing staff on all things aged care. The best part of my role is being able to teach – seeing the ‘aha’ moments when something resonates and those golden moments when nurses tell me they have tried out my recommended strategies for delivering care to their cognitively impaired patients and it has worked.’’ Sharon Strahand, CNC, Acute Care of the Elderly

A CUPPA FOR THE HOSPITAL The residents of The Grange – an over 55s lifestyle village – in Waitara love a cuppa and in doing so, have raised $5000 in the past year for Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. Every month, the residents hold a morning tea and raise money for the hospital. Since 1992, the residents have raised more than $115,000 for the hospital through fetes, chocolate wheels and the morning teas. Last Wednesday, Cathy Cooke, Acting Volunteer Manager and Brian Minnett, Pi...nk Ladies and Males volunteer, attended a morning tea to receive a giant cheque. ``The hospital and staff are very appreciative of the money you have raised,’’ Cathy said. ``Your money is going towards buying much needed equipment in the Lumby building, to help people with mobility issues, those at risk of falling and frail patients.’’ The recent donation will be split between Lumby wards 1 and 2.
